McDonald’s Could Be Cutting Your Favourite Menu Items Very Soon

There’s bad news for McDonald’s fans as a major shakeup could see menus drastically changing.

McDonald’s is a student staple, however, things haven’t been running too smoothly over at the McDonald’s US headquarters.

The current CEO Chris Kempczinkski has shut down US offices temporarily and has warned that corporate employees globally could be at risk of losing their jobs as a way to refocus the company and simplify things. This restructuring is rumoured to come with a restricted and more simplified menu.

What could be leaving the McDonald’s menu?

McDonald’s bosses have been discussing simplifying the menu due to there being too much duplication globally. While the McChicken Sandwich and Mayo Chicken are firm UK favourites, there are over 70 different variations of a crispy chicken sandwich on McDonald’s menus globally. This means that McDonald’s stores could be cutting back and instead, offering a universal menu to all stores.

This is probably disappointing news if you’re someone who likes to pop into McDonald’s on holiday and see what’s on offer compared to what you can get in the UK–– but it does mean that classic items like the Big Mac or McNuggets aren’t going anywhere. This switch-up could definitely see UK menus changing, but it could be as simple as the names of products matching global stores, or a few ingredients being switched up.

How much duplication exists on McDonald’s menus?

While chicken sandwiches won’t be going anywhere, McDonald’s offers a different type of chicken burger in pretty much every country that its operating in.

Some examples include:

  • The McArabia Chicken- UAE
  • The McCrispy Honey Mustard- Spain
  • The Chicken ‘n’ Cheese Burger- Australia
  • The Chicken Maharaja Mac- India
  • The Mayo Chicken- UK
  • The Bai Teriyaki Chicken Fillet-O- Japan
  • The Bacon Ranch Deluxe McCrispy- US
  • The Sauteed Chicken Burger- Taiwan

With this, it’s clear that the majority of these burgers are similar with regional differences. McDonald’s is potentially looking to move away from this and offer just one or two chicken burgers globally.

When will this impact the UK?

Luckily, there’s no official word yet as to when the UK can expect to see any changes. The redundancies have been largely US based, and as America has a much wider range of fast food outlets the competition could definitely be higher. Meanwhile, in the UK McDonald’s offers something that can’t be replicated, cheap, tasty, and readily available fast food pretty much 24/7 with options for kids, vegans and even fussy eaters. While the UK definitely enjoys KFC and Burger King, McDonald’s really doesn’t have a huge competition to worry about.
