If you own an Xbox Series X, PS5 and other next-gen consoles, you’ll be pleased by the Samsung QN95B’s gaming features within its Slim One Connect box that’s included when you buy the QN95B. This is because it handles eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel.), 4K viewing at 120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) for truly smooth gameplay.  The Slim One Connect box houses four HDMI inputs,  including a HDMI 3 which supports eARC and can handle up to 40Gbps (billions of bits per second).

The Sony X90J is a mid-range 4K HDR TV is a strong contender when it comes to high frame rate HDMI functionality so if you’re after a cheap 4K TV, then this is it. Two out of the four HDMI inputs support 4K 120fps gaming, so you can be rest assured that the Sony X90J will work with next-generation consoles like the PS5. 

A very good 120Hz 4K TV for gaming, one of the best features of the X90J is its ability to optimise image viewing. For example, PlayStation 5 HDR will automatically register whether the PS5 is playing video content or a game. Which is incredibly handy.

This 4K 120fps TV has Cognitive XR Processor technology. It works by concentrating on natural focal points on screen and is developed with AI to determine where someone’s focal point is. The LG C2 is one of the best 42-inch 120Hz TVs in 2023. It’s a successor to the LG C1 and is build with an OLED display. Its size is ideal for gamers who want to fit the best tech into a small space.

Whether you go for 42, 48, 55, 65, 77- inches of display, you’ll get four HDMI 2.1 ports, with support for 4K 120Hz (including impressive Dolby Vision gaming at 120fps), VRR with including FreeSync and G-Sync, and ALLM. If you decide to go for models at 55-inches or above however, you’ll get to enjoy an even brighter OLED panel, which means you get even better HDR performance than the LG C1. The LG C2 has decent peak brightness in SDR mode that’s bright enough to use in daylight and overcome glare. Large brights do get dimmed by the ABL (Automatic Bright Limiter) though. You may notice this when watching high-activitiy media such as sports. You can fix this simply by setting “Peak Brightness” to “Off”. While it also does a great job at upscaling DVDs and other 480p content, it can appear a bit soft in comparison to native 4K content, yet you can still expect decent imaging nonetheless. 

This 120Hz 55 inch TV is an  OLED TVs on the market with impressive darks, brights and textures. The 42-inch and 48-inch models deliver the same excellent image quality, but as the panels aren’t as bright as their larger counterparts, we’d recommend shutting the blinds if you’re playing games during the day time.

Sony BRAVIA XR OLED XR55A90J — from £1,599

The best 120Hz TV for motion processing has to be the Sony A90J OLED TV and in comparison is still a cheap 4K TV. It has improved technology to support motion with low-frame rate games and movies, meaning they’ll appear incredibly smooth compared to other TVs. It comes in 55, 65 and 83-inch sizes, meaning they can fit in practically any room.

So what makes its the best motion processing 120hz 4K TV on the market? It has a motion interpolation feature that can bring 30 and 60fps content up to 120fps speed. This in turn helps the appearance of slower content on screen. And if you watch HDR content, expect colours to appear life-like with popping highlights and deep shadows. In dark rooms, you can expect great results too. As a 4K 120fps TV, it has as a near-infinite contrast ratio, thanks to its OLED panel, which still provide perfect blacks. The Sony A90J also has something called a Black Frame Insertion (BFI) feature, which can help reduce motion blur by inserting black frames into content at regular intervals, typically matched with the frame rate of the content.

While it has HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and VRR, it unfortunately doesn’t support FreeSync, which means the A90J, while fabulous, is prone to screen tearing due to the lack of this feature. It does however have two HDMI 2.1 ports, eARC and Dolby Vision support. Plus, it has wide viewing angles and reflections are minimal even in daylight. Just remember that as with most OLED screens, there is a small risk of permanent burn-in, but it’s minimal.

Finally, expect BRAVIA Core, Apple Airplay and Google Chromecast functionality with the Sony A90J too.

Samsung Q70C QLED — from £849 

The edge-lit Samsung Q70C QLED is available in 55, 65, 75 and 85-inches. The imaging contains wonderful contrasts for fast moving game content and movies.

Its got incredibly thin bezels and a trendy, slim and simple stand which will make any room look premium as anything. It also contains four HDMI inputs and 2 USB inputs.

Its lack of local dimming is instead supported by a fully backlight array with Dual LED technology to enhance contrasts and blacks, with brightness hitting up to 600 nits. It also has very decent HDR performance for the price, however like most Samsung TVs, it doesn’t come with Dolby Vision HDR. You already get a list of prest apps too like Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and Apple TV when you need to take a quick break from gaming.

Instead of a full backlight array, the set employs a novel Dual LED arrangement which enhances contrast and black level performance. Watch a movie and the letterbox bars are close to proper black. It’s also a decent HDR performer. We measured peak brightness at 600 nits. The caveat is that Samsung doesn’t offer Dolby Vision HDR, instead limiting dynamic metadata support to HDR10+. In terms of apps, while the Q70C comes without Freeview Play, Samsung’s smart Tizen compensates with a full complement of catch-up TV channels, plus all key streaming apps, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Rakuten TV, Apple TV, and YouTube.

For those looking for an 120Hz 4K TV at a lower price point, the Samsung Q70C QLED is the best TVs for PS5 and Xbox Series X.

How do I know if my TV is 4K?

You’ll know if your TV is 4K when you look at the specifications page of your TV’s manual. This may come under “Resolution” and may be displayed as 2160p or UHD, both of which mean it’s 4K.

If you don’t have a user manual, it’s worth finding out if your TV is 4K by doing a quick internet search of your TV’s make and model.

You might be wondering if the content you’re watching on your TV is 4K. In this case, the current resolution of your TV needs to match the content and have good connection speed (if you’re streaming it). If the content’s optimal resolution isn’t 4K on your 4K TV, then the video won’t be in 4K (or a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160).

Is a 120Hz TV worth it?
