Tinder’s Shocking Truth: With Two-Thirds Of Users Already In Relationships, We Reveal Some Horror Stories

Shocking new research has shown that the majority of Tinder users are already in a relationship.

Gone are the days when you only had to worry about your partner cheating in real life, as Tinder and other dating apps have made it all too easy—anyone that’s ever used Tinder or another dating app probably has a few funny stories to tell. While some people can get into a successful and long-term relationship after meeting on Tinder, for others they’re not so lucky in their experiences.

After new research revealed that nearly two-thirds of Tinder users are already in a relationship and over half aren’t actually interested in arranging a date, we were curious to know if any of our followers had experienced any horror stories.

How are students using Tinder?

While the new research suggests that the majority of Tinder’s users may be using it when they shouldn’t, our followers seemed to be on their best behaviour. 92% of you (357 people) said that you’ve never used Tinder while in a relationship, while only 8% (29 people) admitted that they had.

Meanwhile, the most popular reason our followers use Tinder is to find someone, however, 32% of you also said you use it just for entertainment as well as boosting your confidence and passing the time while you’re bored or lonely.

On that, we decided to ask some of you about your biggest Tinder horror stories, and they really didn’t disappoint. We have kept them anonymous of course, but two of our followers shared some very interesting stories with us.

Tinder horror story 1

What was your Tinder experience like?

“I matched with a guy who messaged me first and we met about a week after matching. He said he’d pick me up at 8:00, but 3 hours later I was still waiting for him to pull up. He did eventually come through and we went for a drive by the beach, it was very cute and I felt like he wanted to get to know me because he was asking a lot of questions. We met twice after that but then he went quiet for 2 weeks and I was pretty much over it but then he called me to go over to his house.

I went and he was explaining why he’d been so quiet, I felt there was more to it so I gave him a stalk on socials and found he had a girlfriend of almost a year. I reached out and explained to her what happened (because girl code) and found out the car he’d picked me up in was her car.”

Did this put you off using Tinder or other dating apps?

“It did put me off dating apps for a short time after that because I didn’t trust anyone and I found it really difficult to trust what the people closest to me were saying too”

Has this experience impacted your views on relationships?

“It did impact my dating experiences afterwards as I didn’t open up as soon as I usually would and it took me a while to trust what men were saying to me”

So, I think we can all agree, a date picking you up in his girlfriend’s car? Enough to put you off dating apps for a while. The audacity!

What was your Tinder experience like?

“My ex and I actually met on Tinder, we started dating in January and went away together to Portugal the same year. Over the course of the relationship, I realised that he was emotionally abusive and our relationship became really toxic.

In the November of the same year my best friend who was single came across his Tinder profile even though he was in a relationship with me, but to avoid an argument with him I chose to ignore it.

A week later, we were in the uni library together and I turned around to see him swiping on Tinder while he was sat next to me. When I asked him about it he said he had no intention of meeting anyone and that he had only used it when he was bored or annoyed at me.”

Did this experience end your relationship?

“It didn’t end the relationship straight away, we were together for another 7 months. In hindsight, I wish I had ended our relationship then and there”

Did this put you off using Tinder or other dating apps?

“The experience has made me more weary of using dating apps and meeting people from them, but it’s so hard to meet anyone in person these days that it’s really hard to not use them.”

Has this experience impacted your views on relationships?

“The experience has definitely made it difficult for me to trust others in a relationship context and I have been single for over a year because I can’t be bothered with the hassle of another relationship after my last one.”

If one thing is clear, it’s that some people have a lot of audacity and genuinely seem to think that they’ll get away with it.

Of course, while there may be many cheaters on Tinder, it also makes it all too easy for friends to stumble across other people’s Tinder profiles, or to stalk people they’ve matched with and find out that they’re in a relationship.

We’re sure there are plenty of Tinder happy endings out there, but the research doesn’t lie so if anything remember to be cautious and maybe ask them on the first date if they’re already in a relationship–– it might save you some time down the line!
