These New Years Resolutions Will Save You Serious £££

New year, new me starts now.

So, your New Year’s resolution is to save money? Yeah yeah yeah, we’ve heard that one before.

But no seriously, if you actually do want to get better at saving money and spending responsibly, it’s time to work out some New Year’s resolutions that are actually going to improve and change your life for the better. If you’re serious about changing your money habits for 2024, here are the New Year’s resolutions you need to try and commit to.

Say goodbye to your overdraft

Alright, we hear you it’s virtually impossible to live without your overdraft sometimes. While it’s a great lifeline, it can also be dangerous when you have a huge limit, especially if it’s easy to increase that limit without any penalties.

Student bank accounts are unique in the way they don’t charge interest and allow you to have limits of sometimes up to £2,000. This is great if you’re behind on rent or need to do a food shop but not so great if you’re a compulsive spender who can’t say no to a night out.

The further you get into your overdraft buying things you actually don’t need, the harder it can be to get out, so set yourself some goals around what is ok to use your overdraft for vs what isn’t. Rent, bills, and food are a yes. Frequent spontaneous nights out and PLT hauls are a no. Try and reduce your limit—it will really lessen the temptation to splurge on Domino’s a few more times than you actually need to.

Try a food subscription

Every YouTuber ever has done a HelloFresh deal and there’s a reason why. It’s super useful if you hate cooking. While opting for a Pot Noodle might look like a tempting dinner if you hate cooking, HelloFresh can actually help you to save money on your food shopping and make sure you’re eating fresh and nutritious meals instead of relying on the student staple of beans on toast every night.

Shop second hand

There is a whole second-hand sustainable fashion movement going on right now and it’s so easy to get involved. While British charity shops are way more hit-and-miss than thrifting in the US, there are plenty of people who do find some gems. Plus, Vinted is a great way to find specific items or trends for super affordable prices. You can easily filter to items under £10 and find some absolute bargains.
