Meal Deals Could Be Banned In The UK

We’re being 100% serious right now.

Meal deals are a British treasure. The simple things in life really are working out how to get the most expensive smoothie for a fraction of the price along with your lunchtime sandwich and crisps.

However, don’t get too comfortable as we could be in danger of losing them for good, meaning lunchtimes will never be the same.

Why could meal deals be banned?

In Wales, the government published a report in June 2022 on how to tackle obesity in Wales and one of the proposals was a new law to stop promotions on volume offers and less healthy food items. This is to discourage people from buying unhealthy options purely because they’re cheaper and to steer them towards healthier options instead. In other words, meal deals could be banned and that could be a disaster.

The argument is that deals like this have an impact on how much unhealthy food people buy, as you’re much more likely to buy a chocolate bar and sugary drink for lunch if you can buy it as part of your meal deal, rather than choosing to buy them individually if it’s going to cost you more.

But, no need to panic just yet as this suggestion hasn’t gone down well, with people arguing that amid the cost of living crisis meal deals are essential to those struggling financially and also that this is unlikely to even impact obesity rates, as let’s face it, there are worse things you could be having for lunch. Plus, meal deals are an important part of UK culture and getting rid of them is sure to cause chaos.

Similar ideas around banning meal deals have also been suggested in England but luckily so far, a decision hasn’t been made yet on whether this is going to happen in both England and Wales, so, for the time being, it looks like we’re in the clear.
