What is the Bama Rush documentary?
HBO Max’s documentary (now on the platform Max) Bama Rush reveals the rigorous rushing process that takes place at the University of Alabama every fall. Viewers get an in-depth look at the mystical weeklong event at one of the most famous universities in the world.
Throughout the documentary, we follow various girls as they pin their hopes and dreams on getting into their favorite sorority at the University of Alabama (although some of the recruits didn’t make it that far).
For those who didn’t indulge in Greek life during college, the entire process seems completely foreign and weirdly conformist. It’s about standing out enough to make an impact, all while holding the status quo with the utmost rigidity.
And the stakes are high, even if the pressure is self-imposed. Some of the girls commented they would rather have a guy tell them to their face that they’re ugly than not get a bid on Bid Day. It’s a strange world that viewers have the unique opportunity to look in on.
Alabama Rush TikTok
The fascination with Bama Rush all began with #OOTD on TikTok. Every single day during the Bama Rush week in 2021, girls took to TikTok to reveal their outfits of the day. Think flutter shorts, Kendra Scott necklaces, and Lululemon shorts. From that, it spiraled into something else: #BamaRush.
#BamaRush then went on to encapsulate everything that had to do with rush week. Funny moments getting ready, rejections leaving girls in tears, and plenty of bright-eyed hopefuls eagerly awaiting their fate. Since 2021, #BamaRush has grown in strength every year.
