TikTokers Are Using Lube As A Primer – But Does It Work?

We wish we were joking, but people really are using sexual lubricant as a base for their makeup.

And if you don’t believe us, just type #lubeprimer into TikTok and you’ll see the millions of views it’s getting. Here’s one of the many reactions to using lube as a primer:

Why use lube as a primer?

The logic behind using lubricant as a primer stems from water and silicone creating a barrier on top of your skin. Essentially, this could be used as a base for your foundation and other makeup products.

Now, in theory, this makes sense. But products that aren’t designed for your face, as a rule of thumb… should generally be avoided.

Another reason some creators on TikTok swear by lube as primer is because it helps them achieve “glass skin†— a highly sought-after look that originated from K-beauty.

Why you shouldn’t use lube as a primer

Given that lube is designed to reduce friction, by this logic, how would this help keep foundation on your face all day? We’ve noticed some very mixed results across the platform from various creators saying it helps their makeup glide on smoothly, but others stating it’s quite bad for your skin.

Check out @teawithmd, a trained dermatologist’s take on the trend:

Whilst all skincare runs the risk of a skin reaction, lube could increase said risks with the fragrances and chemicals it contains. Not to mention the silicones could result in unwanted breakouts.
