Frequently Asked Questions

What does a dehumidifier do?

Dehumidifiers draw and remove the excess moisture (water) from the air in your home. By doing this, the dehumidifier combats condensation and prevents the growth of mould and reduces dampness.

How does a dehumidifier work?

There are two types of dehumidifiers: refrigeration dehumidifiers and desiccant dehumidifiers.

Refrigeration dehumidifiers: These tend to be the more common type of dehumidifier. They work by drawing the air in from the room and cooling it over a coil to a low temperature by a refrigeration system. The water vapour condenses onto the cold surface and the water drips into a bucket underneath.

Desiccant dehumidifiers: Desiccant dehumidifiers use an alternative method. These dehumidifiers work by passing the air over a wheel coated with a water-absorbing material (desiccant). This water is then removed by passing a stream of warm air through it so it’s dry and can be re-generated to collect more moisture on its next pass. The water is collected in the water collection tank.

How much does it cost to run a dehumidifier?

How much a dehumidifier costs to run will very much depend on the type of dehumidifier you have. The bigger the dehumidifier and the higher the wattage, the more watts it’ll use., and therefore will cost more to run.

Here are some general guidelines to help to calculate the cost:

  1. Wattage: Check the power rating of your dehumidifier, which is typically measured in watts (W). Most dehumidifiers in the UK range from 300W to 700W or more. The higher the wattage, the more electricity it will consume.
  2. Hours of Operation: Determine how many hours per day you plan to run the dehumidifier. This can vary depending on your specific needs, such as humidity levels and the size of the area you want to dehumidify.
  3. Electricity Rate: Check your electricity bill or contact your utility provider to find out your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh). In the UK, electricity rates can vary, but as of my last update in 2022, the average residential electricity rate was around 14p to 20p per kWh.
  4. Calculation: Use the following formula to estimate the daily and monthly operating costs of your dehumidifier:

Daily Cost = (Wattage / 1000) * Hours of Operation * Electricity Rate per kWh

Monthly Cost = Daily Cost * 30 (assuming an average 30-day month)

For example, if you have a 500W dehumidifier and run it for 8 hours a day, and your electricity rate is 15p per kWh:

Daily Cost = (500W / 1000) * 8 hours * 15p/kWh = 60p

Monthly Cost = 60p * 30 = £18

Keep in mind that this is just an estimate. Your actual costs may vary based on fluctuations in electricity rates and how efficiently your dehumidifier operates.

What size dehumidifier do I need?

The size of the dehumidifier you need depends on the size of the area you want to dehumidify, as well as the specific conditions and moisture levels in that area. To figure out which size is most appropriate for you, you should consider the following factors:

  • Room size: measure the square footage of the area you want to dehumidify.
  • Relative humidity: Consider the current relative humidity level in the room. You may need a larger dehumidifier if the humidity is exceptionally high, or if you want to maintain a very low humidity level.
  • Moisture source/cause: Identify the source of moisture in the room. If it’s a particularly damp area or if there’s a significant moisture source (such as a leak), you might need a larger capacity dehumidifier.
  • Desired humidity level: Consider the ideal relative humidity level you want to maintain. If you’re aiming for a very low humidity level, you may need a more powerful dehumidifier.

Dehumidifiers are typically rated in terms of pints of water removed from the air per day. Here are some rough guidelines for the capacity you might need based on room size:

  • Small rooms (up to 1,000 sq. ft.): 25-30 pints per day
  • Medium-sized rooms (1,000 to 2,500 sq. ft.): 30-50 pints per day
  • Large rooms or basements (over 2,500 sq. ft.): 50-70+ pints per day

How to use a dehumidifier?

If you’re new to the world of dehumidifiers, don’t worry! They’re actually fairly straight-forward to use. Just follow these three steps and you’re sorted.

  1. Place the dehumidifier in the centre of the room you want to de-damp. This helps the air to circulate properly around the dehumidifier. If the dehumidifier has a top-mounted air discharge (air is released from the top) then you can place it against the wall if you wish. If there’s a particular area of the room that has a lot of moisture, place the dehumidifier in close proximity to the source of moisture.
  2. Select the right settings. Once you’ve placed your dehumidifier unit in the most suitable place, select the settings you need, like what relative humidity level you want to achieve, or if it has a timer, set the timer for a specific amount of time (if required).
  3. Empty the water tank and clean the filter. Like many appliances, you have to clean and maintain it for the best results. A dehumidifier is no different. Once the water tank/bucket is full, ensure you empty it to avoid overflowing. The same applies to the filter, regularly check it to make sure dust hasn’t built-up too much and make a habit of cleaning the filters at least every 6 months.
