Concrete is one of the most versatile building blocks in Minecraft β solid, smooth, and available in all 16 colours.
If you've been building with wool and want something that won't burn down or look fuzzy, concrete is the upgrade you need.
Here's everything you need to know: how to craft it, which dyes to use, and how to harden it into a proper block.
What You Need to Craft Concrete Powder
Before you can make a concrete block, you need to craft Concrete Powder first. You'll need three ingredients:
1 unit of Dye (any of the 16 colours)
4 units of Sand
4 units of Gravel
Open your crafting table and arrange these nine items in any order across the 3x3 grid β there's no specific pattern required. This yields 8 units of Concrete Powder per craft.
The 16 Available Dye Colours
Concrete comes in every colour in the game. Here's the full list:
White
Light Gray
Gray
Black
Brown
Red
Orange
Yellow
Lime
Green
Cyan
Light Blue
Blue
Purple
Magenta
Pink
How to Get Each Dye
Most dyes are crafted from flowers or other natural materials. Here are the most commonly used ones:
Colour | Source Materials
|
|---|---|
White | Bone Meal or Lily of the Valley |
Black | Ink Sac or Wither Rose |
Red | Poppy, Red Tulip, Rose Bush, or Beetroot |
Blue | Lapis Lazuli or Cornflower |
Yellow | Dandelion or Sunflower |
Other colours follow a similar pattern β orange from Orange Tulip, green from Cactus (smelted), pink from Pink Tulip or Peony, and so on. Most flowers in the game correspond directly to a dye colour.
How to Harden Concrete Powder into Concrete
Concrete Powder is not the same as Concrete β it behaves like sand and gravel, meaning it falls when there's no block underneath it. To turn it into solid, permanent Concrete, you need to expose it to water. Drop it into a lake, river, or any body of water and it will instantly harden into a Concrete Block.
A practical tip: you can also pour a Water Bucket directly onto placed Concrete Powder, which is faster than finding a body of water when you're building in a dry biome.
Mining and Keeping Concrete
Once hardened, Concrete can be mined with any pickaxe and will drop as a block β no silk touch required. The colour is permanent: hardened Concrete stays that way forever and doesn't require water to stay solid. It's one of the most durable decorative blocks in the game.
What's Coming: Concrete Slabs and Stairs
If you've ever wanted to build curved structures or detailed architectural details using coloured concrete, good news: Minecraft is adding Concrete slabs and stairs in all 16 colours in an upcoming 2026 update. They're currently available in Java Snapshot 7 and Bedrock Preview 26.40 if you want to test them now. The full release is expected in fall 2026 β a big deal for anyone who builds seriously.
Bonus: Note Blocks
While you're decorating, Note Blocks are worth experimenting with if you haven't already. They're musical blocks that emit a sound when hit or powered with Redstone. Different block materials placed underneath a Note Block change its instrument type β concrete underneath gives a specific tone that's useful in Redstone music builds. Place them in sequence and trigger them in order for some surprisingly satisfying results.
