If your TikTok FYP is anything like ours, you've probably stumbled across someone talking about their skincare routine as "looksmaxxing", or a student claiming they've "optimised their sleep" with a 12-step bedtime routine.
Welcome to the world of maxxing β Gen Z's obsession with maximising literally every area of life.
But what does it all actually mean? And is there a difference between casually trying to glow up and full-on maxxing? We've broken it all down for you.

What Is Maxxing?
"Maxxing" is internet slang for taking a specific part of your life and optimising it to the absolute max. Think of it like a video game character β you're allocating all your stat points into one area to boost it as high as it'll go.
The term originally came out of online forums in the early 2010s (we'll get to that), but it exploded into the mainstream on TikTok where it's been racking up billions of views across every possible niche β from sleep routines to revision habits to skincare.
The appeal? It turns self-improvement into a system, a game, even a bit of a personality. Instead of vaguely "trying to be healthier", you're sleepmaxxing. It sounds more intentional. More like a strategy. And Gen Z loves a strategy.

Where Did Maxxing Come From?
The OG version β looksmaxxing β originated in incel and lookism forums in the early 2010s, where it was used to describe obsessive approaches to improving physical appearance. It had a dark and toxic edge.
Fast forward to TikTok, and maxxing got a glow-up of its own. The term was reclaimed and expanded way beyond its original context, becoming shorthand for any kind of deliberate self-optimisation. These days it's more likely to appear in a video about protein intake or a morning routine than anything with a sinister edge β though it's worth knowing where it came from.
Your Maxxing Dictionary (Every Type You Need to Know)
Here's the jargon buster you didn't know you needed.
Looksmaxxing β The OG. Optimising your physical appearance through anything from skincare and fitness to styling tweaks and grooming. We've got the best skincare products students are loving right now.
Softmaxxing β The approachable version of looksmaxxing: think better skincare, hitting the gym, sorting your sleep, or upgrading your haircut. No extreme measures, just incremental glow-up energy.
Hardmaxxing β The more extreme end: cosmetic procedures, surgery, or pharmaceutical interventions. Basically, anything that requires a medical professional (or a lot of money).
Sleepmaxxing β Obsessing over sleep quality and trying to improve sleep: consistent bedtimes, blackout curtains, no screens, sleep tracking apps, mouth tape, the works.
Studymaxxing β Applying the same hyper-focus to your academic life and revision techniques β Pomodoro timers, spaced repetition, optimal study environments. Basically, turning yourself into a revision machine.
Moneymaxxing β Maximising your finances through budgeting, side hustles, investing, or cutting unnecessary spending. Very much the student debt era's answer to getting ahead.
Gymmaxxing / Fitmaxxing β Going all in on fitness and performance. Beyond just "going to the gym" β this is tracking every metric, optimising protein, and treating your body like an athletic project.
Rizzmaxxing β Working on your charisma, social skills, and general pull. The soft skill version of maxxing.
Auramaxxing β Levelling up your overall vibe and presence. Less tangible than the others β more about energy, confidence, and how you carry yourself.
Mewing β A specific technique that went viral: positioning your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth to theoretically reshape your jawline over time. Orthodontists areβ¦ unconvinced.
Mogging β Not a maxxing type, but key vocab: to "mog" someone means to outclass them in a specific area. "She completely mogged everyone at that event."

Is Maxxing a Good Thing?
Honestly? It depends entirely on how you approach it.
At its best, maxxing is just self-improvement with a fun name. Wanting to sleep better, eat well, study smarter, or build better money habits is genuinely great β especially as a student when you're building habits that'll stick.
At its worst, it can tip into obsession, perfectionism, and comparing yourself to heavily filtered TikTok creators. The looksmaxxing end of the spectrum in particular has been linked to body image anxiety and unrealistic standards β especially among younger guys.
The sweet spot? Maxxing the things that make you feel good and function better, rather than chasing an algorithm-approved version of yourself.
The Bottom Line
Maxxing is here to stay β and honestly, a lot of it is just self-improvement with better branding. Whether you're sleepmaxxing your way through freshers, moneymaxxing on a student budget, or auramaxxing your way through seminars, the goal is the same: becoming a slightly better version of yourself.
Just maybe hold off on the 24/7 mewing.
