What is Cyber Monday?

While there’s a strong sense of occasion with Black Friday (think of people queuing outside stores to get the best deals), Cyber Monday is the day retailers go all out to get their best deals live online. Not a great time to lose your wifi connection, for sure.

When is Cyber Monday 2024?

Cyber Monday 2024 takes place on Monday, 2nd December. If you’re in the US, it’s easy to remember because it’s just after Thanksgiving. Anywhere outside the US and we’re fortunate enough to be reminded by endless Amazon notifications.

When did Cyber Monday start?

While Cyber Monday is only 19 years old, it feels like it’s from a different world. It was started in 2005 when the internet was still relatively new as a way to boost ecommerce sales on their website. Remember - Apple wouldn’t launch the iphone until 2007 so websites were (mostly) awful to look at on (most) phones.

Why is it called Cyber Monday?

Before Apple gave the world the ‘i’ prefix with its iPhone, the term ‘cyber’ was often used to refer to anything online. Curios include cybercafes where you could pay to access your hotmail account (and you were almost as likely to Yahoo something as you were to Google it). Plus there were cyber pets, punks, space and security.

When did Cyber Monday become a thing in the UK?

As is so often the case, the UK was a little late to the party (mainly due to the dire state of internet connectivity). Somewhere around 2009 and 2010 British retailers decided they wanted a piece of the action and got involved. Fun fact: most people initially used their work computers to shop for Cyber Monday deals because the internet was better. Plus also: work.

Is Cyber Monday still a thing?

It is! But it’s less of a frantic 24 scrabble that it used to be with many retailers opting to adopt a Cyber Week philosophy and large retailers like Amazon extending it even further.

What are the best Cyber Monday discounts?

The nature of Cyber Monday means that often the best discounts are available on tech. Think laptops, phones, PS5s (we hope). But you’ll also see plenty of deals on fashion, beauty and lifestyle items, like coffee machines.

When will the Cyber Monday deals on Student Beans go live?

Cyber Monday deals for students often start with a few teaser and specials as Black Friday starts to fade. But the biggest (and best) discounts will go live on Cyber Monday, 27 November, 2023.

Real life story: Will’s Cyber Monday UK experience

We recently caught up with Will to get the lowdown on Cyber Monday from a student’s point of view. Will’s 20 and studying theatre in London. We asked him what he’d previously bought on Cyber Monday. He said, > “Last year I bought a mini version of the PlayStation that had a load of old games on it. I often scan for stuff that will help my computer or just stuff that would normally be kind of expensive that’s a little bit less expensive, like headsets or hard drives. And then occasionally if I see a book or a box set or something that I like the look of, that looks cheaper than it would normally be, then I might go for that.”

He also recommends keeping an eye out for new games as they can be ‘pretty expensive’ so in Cyber Week you often get good deals on digital versions of games.
