When do I need to apply for student finance?

You should apply as early as possible — ideally in the spring before you start uni. This gives Student Finance England enough time to process your application and ensure your loan is ready for the start of term.

Will I actually have to pay back my student loan?

You only repay your loan once you're earning above a certain threshold (currently £27,295 for Plan 5). Repayments are based on what you earn, not what you borrowed, and any remaining balance is written off after 40 years.
