Europe’s cheapest cities
The UK has some of the best hidden gems in and around Europe, but we get it, sometimes a staycation isn’t what you need.
If you fancy a change of scenery but don’t have an extensive budget, these are some of Europe’s cheapest cities that are definitely worth a visit.
Vilnius, Lithuania
The capital of Lithuania is full of historic charm and fairytale vibes. Ranked first in the Post Office City Costs Barometer, the city is cheap and cheerful. Plus, it’s totally underrated so you will probably miss groups of tourists when you visit and have the city to yourself (and the locals obvs).
Athens, Greece
The 5th cheapest city break in Europe according to the Post Office Barometer, Athens has it all. Sun, sea, land, and incredible food. Opt for smaller guest rooms or boutique hotels rather than fancy all-inclusive hotels to make it even cheaper.
Skopje, North Macedonia
Super cheap and super safe, Skopje in North Macedonia is a unique European city break for those needing an affordable trip away. The temperature throughout September and October range from mid to low 20s, so it’s ideal for going off-peak (outside of summer) to make it cheaper.
Bucharest, Romania
Bucharest is the perfect hot spot for a cheap European city break with great nightlife, delicious traditional food, and stunning scenery. Avoid the heavily-tourist areas where the prices are hiked up — explore the side streets instead for cheaper hidden gems.
Bratislava, Slovakia
This gorgeous city in Slovakia won’t break the bank on your European city break. Although not the cheapest European city, the prices are around a third lower than London, and 20% less than Manchester — the perfect excuse to leave the country for your hols.
