If you’re from an ethnic minority group you may be eligible to apply to a range of scholarships in the UK to help you out while you’re in uni or pursuing further education. These scholarships can be in the form of a grant to help cover tuition fees or living expenses and unlike normal student loans, these won’t have to be paid back. Here are some of the best scholarships that you can apply for!

1. Amos Bursary

Available to any students from African or Caribbean backgrounds in year 12 applying to any university. The scholarship was previously for boys only but has been extended to include girls from this year.

2. Bank of England African-Caribbean Scholarship

Open to students wishing to apply to finance or banking courses or internships. Applicants need to have applied for one of the Bank’s early careers internships and need to be from a household with an income of less than £50,000 per year.

3. The Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Scholarship

This scholarship is available to ethnic minority groups wishing to start higher education in law, science, technology, business, finance, the arts, engineering, maths and creative sectors such as fashion and media. The scholarship will cover costs of education and applicants will have to opportunity to be mentored by leaders in their chosen field.

4. Open Futures Scholarship at The Open University

To be eligible you need to be an ethnic minority with a household income of no more than £25,000 a year and is open for new prospective undergraduate students and you’ll be awarded £1,000 to help towards living expenses.

5. Stormzy Scholarship for Black UK Students at Cambridge University

Stormzy launched this scholarship in 2018 to help young Black students wishing to study at Cambridge University. The scholarship will cover the full tuition costs and provide a maintenance grant to help cover living costs and expenses totalling up to £18,000.

6. Royal Academy Of Engineering Scholarships

For undergraduates wishing to pursue a career in engineering. The scholarship can be up to £5,000 to cover the 3-years of the course and are put towards personal development activities.

7. Royal College of Music BAME Scholarship

For students wishing to study at the Royal College of Music, the university will give out 3 scholarships per year to students from ethnic minority backgrounds. Awards can be up to the value of the full tuition fees and also help to cover living costs.

8. George Viner Memorial Fund bursary – National Union of Journalists

For students wishing to pursue a career in journalism, the Geoge Viner Memorial Fund bursary can cover the costs of tuition, accommodation, books, travel expenses and will receive mentoring advice.

9. BAME Postgraduate scholarships- University of Leicester

For students interested in studying a postgraduate course at the University of Leicester in Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities. The university offers five awards for students applying for a distance learning course and five for students applying for a campus-based course. The award includes a full tuition fee waiver as well as academic support.

10. SJM Concerts Futures Scholarship – Manchester Metropolitan University

This scholarship helps 36 students over 3 years while they’re studying at the Manchester Metropolitan University. In order to qualify you must be from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background and demonstrate financial need. Students will also need to be enrolled on the first year of either a Business Management, Events Management or Music and Sound Design degree. Students will get £1,200 per year of study over their 3 years in university.

For students wishing to pursue the humanities at Postgraduate level, Queen Mary University is offering a tuition fee wavier and money to help cover living expenses.
