London will happily take every penny you have. Rent, a pint, a single Zone 1–2 journey — it adds up before you've done anything at all.
The upside is that London is one of the cheapest cities in the world to actually enjoy, as long as you know which doors open for nothing. The national museums are free by law. The best view in the City costs £0. There's free stand-up seven nights a week in Islington and free tickets to TV recordings you'd otherwise pay £40 to see live.
We've rounded up every London freebie worth your time — checked this August, with the booking catches spelled out so you don't turn up to a sold-out slot.

Book a free ticket to Horizon 22, London's highest free viewing platform
Level 58 of 22 Bishopsgate, 833ft up, floor-to-ceiling glass with no barriers, and it costs nothing. It's higher than Sky Garden and considerably higher than the free bit of anywhere else in the City.
Free slots run 10am–5pm and are released every Monday at 10am for the following two weeks. They go fast, so set a reminder. Weekday closing is 6pm, Saturday 5pm and Sunday 4pm, with last admission 30 minutes before. A limited number of walk-ins are sometimes available on the day, but don't build a plan around one.
Claim a free timed ticket to Sky Garden
Three storeys of glass and planting at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street, with terraces looking straight down the river at Tower Bridge and The Shard. You don't need to buy a drink or book a table — your visit can genuinely cost £0.
Free timed tickets are released Monday mornings for dates around three weeks ahead, and your slot lasts one hour from entry. Bring photo ID, as the venue runs a Challenge 25 policy. Under-16s aren't admitted after 6pm on weekdays or 9pm at weekends.
Walk straight into Tate Modern's free viewing level
No booking, no ticket, no Monday morning alarm. Head up inside the Blavatnik Building for a free look across the Thames at St Paul's, then wander back down through the free collection. The best unplanned view in London, and the only one on this list you can decide on twenty minutes beforehand.
Free Museums, Galleries and Lates
Britain's national museums don't charge for their permanent collections, which means an absurd amount of the world's best art and archaeology is free to you every single day — not just on selected Sundays like Paris or Florence.
Visit London's national museums for free, any day of the week
British Museum — the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures and roughly eight million objects. Free timed tickets are worth booking during peak months, April to August.
National Gallery — Van Gogh's Sunflowers, plus Turner, Monet and Leonardo. On Trafalgar Square, so easy to drop into for 40 minutes.
Natural History Museum — the blue whale in Hintze Hall and the dinosaur galleries. Open daily 10am–5.50pm, last entry 5.30pm. A free timed slot booked at nhm.ac.uk saves you a 30–45 minute walk-up queue on busy days.
Victoria and Albert Museum — art and design, and the courtyard is a decent free lunch spot.
Science Museum — next door to the Natural History Museum in South Kensington.
Tate Britain and National Portrait Gallery — both free, both far quieter than their more famous neighbours.
Get into V&A East in Stratford for free, no booking needed
The V&A's newest site opened in April 2026 on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Two permanent galleries on craft and making, free, no ticket required — and nowhere near as rammed as South Kensington on a Saturday.
Get free after-hours access at V&A Friday Late
Free, drop-in, no ticket. Live performance, installations, films, DJs and late exhibition openings, themed around whatever's currently on. Check the V&A's what's on page before you go, as dates and themes shift.
Other museums run free lates too: the British Museum on Fridays, and Tate Modern and Tate Britain on Friday and Saturday evenings. Late slots are quieter and considerably better than a Saturday afternoon.
More free museums to look out for
Horniman Museum, Forest Hill — a Victorian tea magnate's genuinely strange collection, including the famously overstuffed walrus. The museum opens at 10am but the gardens open at 7.15am (8am Sundays and bank holidays).
BFI Mediatheque, Southbank — hundreds of films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive, watched free in your own booth. Ideal for a rainy afternoon and a dissertation you're avoiding.
Free Comedy, Gigs and TV Recordings
See free* stand-up seven nights a week at Angel Comedy
Upstairs at the Camden Head in Islington there's free stand-up every single night of the week. It's the backbone of London's free comedy circuit, running new-material nights midweek and tighter shows on Fridays and Saturdays, with work-in-progress sets from names like Simon Amstell and Dylan Moran turning up unannounced.
The same team runs The Bill Murray (39 Queen's Head St, N1), where shows go on daily and entry is often free or pay-what-you-want.
Get free* entry to gigs at London's grassroots pubs
Grassroots venues are where every band you've paid to see learned to hold an audience, and plenty of London nights are free on the door. The unwritten rule is that you buy a drink.
Shacklewell Arms, Dalston — near-daily gigs and club nights, lots of them free entry
Old Blue Last, Shoreditch — free shows from bands frequently about to get much bigger
Sebright Arms, Bethnal Green — regular free gigs spotlighting new acts
The Good Mixer, Camden — free shows most Thursdays and Sundays, in the pub Britpop was basically built in
Jamboree, King's Cross — free world music sessions, including Sunday afternoons 3pm–5pm
The Ivy House, Nunhead — free jazz every Sunday afternoon, 4pm–6pm
Catch a free in-store gig at Rough Trade East
The Brick Lane record shop runs live in-stores, usually around 7pm. Some require you to buy the album to get a wristband, but others hand out free wristbands from the counter an hour before, and some are simply first come, first served. All ages, so no ID panic.
Claim free tickets to TV recordings with SRO Audiences
This is the most underrated freebie in London. Studio audiences are effectively free marketing, so tickets cost nothing — you're filling a seat for a show you'd otherwise watch at home.
Every SRO ticket is free. Their books include Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, The Last Leg, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, The Chase and Loose Women.
Live at the Apollo records at the Hammersmith Apollo on 15, 16 and 17 September 2026, and each audience sees two episodes. There are also recordings at the Backyard Comedy Club in Bethnal Green on 7 and 9 September, plus a topical comedy show recording in Paddington on Sunday evenings through to 11 October.

Free Events in London This August
Go to Notting Hill Carnival for free on 30 and 31 August
Europe's largest street festival hits its 60th anniversary this August bank holiday, and it's free to attend.
Sunday 30 August is Family Day, with the children's parade from around 10.30am. Monday 31 August is Adults' Day and the main parade — the biggest and loudest of the two. Expect more than 50 mas bands, over 30 static sound systems and several hundred food stalls across a three-and-a-half-mile route through W10 and W11. Only Saturday's UK National Panorama steel band competition is ticketed.
At 3pm on both days there's a 72-second silence for the 72 people who died in the Grenfell Tower fire. Nearby stations go exit-only or shut entirely as crowds build, so check the route map and plan your exit before you need it. Closest stations are Notting Hill Gate, Westbourne Park, Ladbroke Grove, Latimer Road, Holland Park and Queensway.
Spend a free day in the royal parks and markets
Free, open, no booking. Richmond Park for deer and genuinely wild-feeling London, Hyde Park and Regent's Park for the classic version, and Kyoto Garden in Holland Park when you want somewhere quiet. Borough Market and Camden Market cost nothing to wander, and the street performers on the South Bank and at Covent Garden are free entertainment on any afternoon.
Get free birthday treats, app sign-up freebies and freshers fair swag
Not everything free in London involves leaving the house.
Birthday freebies — plenty of chains give you something free on your birthday just for joining their mailing list or app. Greggs, Krispy Kreme, Barburrito and Las Iguanas are reliable starting points, and beauty brands including The Body Shop, Rituals and Space NK tend to offer a birthday voucher or product. Sign up a couple of weeks ahead, as some need your date of birth on file in advance.
App sign-up freebies — a lot of chains hand you a free item just for downloading the app and creating an account. Do a batch of them before a day in town.
Six months of Amazon Prime Student, free — free next-day delivery and Prime Video for half a year, then half price after that. Claim it through your Student Beans account, and see the Amazon Prime must-haves students actually rate if you're not sure where to start.
Freshers fairs — mid-to-late September, and comfortably the highest concentration of free stuff you'll encounter all year. Tote bags, stationery, energy drinks, pizza slices, samples. Take an empty bag.
How to Claim Your London Freebies
Most of these follow the same handful of rules, so keep these in mind before you head out:
Set a Monday morning reminder. Sky Garden and Horizon 22 both release free tickets on Monday mornings. This one habit unlocks the two best views in London.
Go on a weekday, and go early. Free doesn't mean uncrowded. Museums are worst late morning — arrive at opening or use a Friday late.
Follow venues directly. Free gigs at the Shacklewell or the Old Blue Last get announced on Instagram, not on ticketing sites.
Join the audience ticket mailing lists. The good recordings go to people already on the list who can move quickly.
Bring photo ID. Sky Garden runs a Challenge 25 policy, and you'll want student ID for the café, shop or pub afterwards.
Check the small print. Some free tickets are timed, some are one hour only, and some venues rope off terraces for private hire with no warning.
