Bournemouth's food scene is better than its reputation, and it isn't concentrated where you'd expect. The seafront has the views, but Westbourne has the independents, Charminster has the cheap international food, and Winton — where most students live — has its own high street worth knowing about.
There's also a Michelin Guide-recommended restaurant here, which surprises people.

Where To Eat By Area
Westbourne is the one to know. A genuine village high street about a mile west of the centre, with the highest concentration of independents in Bournemouth — steakhouses, Greek tavernas, cheese and wine bars, cafés and the town's most famous chip shop.
Charminster is where the international food and the affordable takeaways are. If you're cooking less than you planned, this is your area.
Winton has its own high street on Wimborne Road, which matters because most students live there. It's practical rather than glamorous, with a few genuine independents mixed in.
The seafront and town centre have the views, the chains and the hotel restaurants.

The serious one. Recommended in the Michelin Guide, holding 2 AA rosettes, and rated among the best restaurants in Dorset by the Good Food Guide. Small, ingredient-led, and the place to go when someone else is paying. Book well ahead.
Westbourne Grill House
An independent, family-run steakhouse in Westbourne that's been voted the number one steakhouse in Bournemouth for seven consecutive years. Everything sourced from farms within a 30-mile radius, and menus rotate seasonally. Intimate, so book.
Chez Fred
The Bournemouth fish and chips institution, on Seamoor Road in Westbourne. If you eat one thing in this town, it's arguably this.

Romanzo Greek Taverna
Family-run in Westbourne since 1986, doing Greek and Cypriot food in a cosy room covered in murals and souvenirs. The kind of place that survives four decades because it's good.
Renoufs Cheese and Wine Bar
Also Westbourne, founded in 2015, with over 200 wines, champagnes and spirits alongside charcuterie, mezze and a famously large Ploughman's. Seats 60, holds a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice award, and runs quiz nights. Book ahead.
Piggies
A tiny family-run café on Poole Road in Westbourne doing proper homemade British food — mac and cheese, cottage pie, roast beef, all-day breakfast — plus Purbeck ice cream.

Flamingo
An independent all-day café tucked onto Winton high street, which makes it the most convenient decent coffee and brunch spot if you're living in the student area.
Seafront Dining
WestBeach
The seafront institution, right at Pier Approach, doing British seafood with a view straight out over Bournemouth Pier. Haddock, hake, sea bass, mussels and Poole Bay lobster. There's live music on the last Thursday of the month.

The Real Greek — 25% off main menu food
The strongest offer of the lot, and there's a Bournemouth branch. 25% off main menu food, Sunday to Thursday, dine-in only.
Excludes the Weekday Lunch menu, the Filoxenia all-day menu and any set or sharing menus. A discretionary 10% service charge is added to bills.
Zizzi — 30% off food
30% off food from Sunday 5pm through Friday, for up to 6 people per code. There's a separate 20% off food offer that runs on Fridays and Sundays.
Watch out: the offer is excluded at a list of branches including Portsmouth and Port Solent — both close enough to matter if you're travelling along the coast. Not valid on Bank Holidays.

Bournemouth has two Harvesters, at Cooper Dean and the Neptune in Boscombe.

One pattern worth noting: almost every restaurant discount excludes weekends or restricts them heavily. If you're eating out on a student budget, eat out midweek.
