Newcastle has a reputation for being one of the friendliest cities in the UK. It's also one of the cheapest places to eat out — and as a student, that combination is hard to beat.
You can get a proper lunch here for less than a fiver. Not a sad meal deal eaten standing up, either. We're talking hand-pulled noodles, Greek gyros, Swedish cardamom buns and pizza by the slice, all within a ten-minute walk of both campuses.
The trick is knowing where to go and when. Newcastle's best cheap eats are clustered in a few very specific places, and most of the genuinely good deals run at lunchtime on weekdays.

Grainger Market: the cheapest lunch in Newcastle
If you only remember one thing from this guide, make it this one.
Grainger Market is a Grade I listed indoor market on Grainger Street that's been trading since 1835. It's a five-minute walk from both Newcastle University and Northumbria's City Campus, and it is comfortably the densest cluster of cheap food in the city.
Most stalls will feed you properly for £3 to £8.
The catch is the opening hours. The market runs 9am to 5:30pm, Monday to Saturday, and closes on Sundays and bank holidays. So it's a lunch plan, not a dinner plan. Plan accordingly.
The best weekday lunch deals in Newcastle
Here's the pattern worth internalising: almost every properly good deal in Newcastle runs Monday to Friday, roughly 11am to 3pm.
Same food, same venue, several pounds cheaper — purely because of when you turn up.

Little COSMO looks like the outlier on price until you compare it with their own dinner sitting, which is £20.99 and up. Going at lunch saves you four to six quid for the same buffet — and they also run 10% off food for students, Sunday to Friday, on production of a valid student ID.
Worth knowing: the Meat:Stack and I Scream for Pizza offers both have published end dates in October 2026, so check they're still running before you make a special trip.
Cheap eats in Newcastle by area
City centre
The centre is where you'll find the biggest concentration of student deals, mostly because it's where the chains are.
Burgz and Friez, Percy Street — North East smash burgers, around £8.95
Mowgli, Grainger Town — Indian street food plates from about £5, so you can build a meal to your budget
Master Wang Noodle, St Mary's Place — handmade biang biang noodles, small from around £10
Blake's Coffee Shop, Grey Street — full English for £7.95 in a proper old-school café
Three Bulls Head, Percy Street — burger and a drink from around £7.79
Flower Cafe, Grainger Street — sourdough toasted sandwiches, all under a tenner
Priory Press, Nelson Street — pressed sandwiches, juices and açaí bowls, everything under £10
Greggs — several branches, and there's a reason it's a Newcastle institution. It started here.
Newcastle also picked up a 60,000 sq ft food hall, Freight Island, at Eldon Square in 2026, plus Dave's Hot Chicken in Grey's Quarter. Good options if you're eating with a group who can't agree on anything.
Stowell Street and Chinatown
Stowell Street is Newcastle's Chinatown, it's walkable from both universities, and portions here tend to go further per pound than anywhere on Grey Street.
Almost nobody on this street publishes prices online, so we're not going to invent them. What we can tell you is where to start:
12 Muqam — Uyghur food: spicy chicken stews, hand-pulled noodles, kebabs, salted milk tea. The most distinctive meal on the street.
Little Asia Gen 2.0 — hot pot and BBQ buffet
Sky Chinese Cuisine — dim sum, steamed pork, beef ribs
Hanoi Pho — pho and summer rolls, opened 2026
Happiness2 — hot pot, dim sum and bubble tea
Just off Stowell Street, Yangguofu Malatang on Percy Street lets you build your own malatang by weight, which is a very good way to eat exactly as much as you can afford.
Ouseburn
Ouseburn is Newcastle's creative valley — a fifteen-minute walk from the centre, full of breweries, galleries and live music. It's also quietly great for cheap food.
Gingerino's Kitchen, Stepney Bank — the £6 two-slices-and-a-can lunch special is one of the best-value plates in the city
Kiln, Hume Street — vegan hummus board with three fresh salads, £9.50
The Cluny, Lime Street — daily specials under £10, and free gigs most weeks
The Free Trade Inn — Wednesday pizza nights and the best free view in Newcastle
PATTYMELTS, Stepney Bank — regularly called the best burgers in the city
Northern Rye, Byker — sausage rolls and croissants worth the walk
Jesmond
If you live in Jesmond, Osborne Road is your local. It's not the cheapest area, but there are deals if you look.
Fat Hippo, St Georges Terrace — two courses for £17.50 between 5pm and 6pm on weekdays, plus a student discount (more on that below)
The Holy Hobo — burgers under £8, or three small plates for £15
Dabbawal, Brentwood Mews — weekday lunch of a starter, main and side for £16 per person
Sohe, Osborne Road — pan-Asian small plates, any three for £20
Zapatista, Osborne Road — build-your-own burritos, filling and good value
Heaton and Byker
Heaton is where a lot of second and third years end up, and Chillingham Road has quietly become one of the best food streets in the city.
Chucho's Mexican Street Food, Shields Road — Dorado taco for £3.50, which is a bargain in any city
Olive & Bean, Heaton Road — budget-friendly weekend brunch
Chillingham Road itself is worth a wander: Dot Bagel, Handsome Sandwich, Flint Pizza, Zenobia Arabian street food, Paros and Nova Cafe & Bakery are all on one stretch
Quayside
I Scream for Pizza — the £5.50 slice-and-a-drink lunch deal, and the best-value thing on the river
The Head of Steam — stone-baked pizzas, all under £15
Quayside Sunday Market — every Sunday along the river. Free to wander, cheap to shop, and the street food is good.

Early Bird — upgrade any regular hot drink or iced coffee to a large for 50p before 10am
Friday Treat — cake for £1.50 on Fridays when you buy a hot drink, from 12pm
Bring your own cup — 30p off your hot drink at every campus café
Northumbria University
Northumbria's Food Wallet works on the Time2Eat app. You pre-load credit and get a discount on the whole balance:

Usable at Habita, Cafe Central, CCE Starbucks, Communitea and Foragers Pod across City Campus and Coach Lane. One thing to watch: any remaining balance has to be used before 31 July of the scheme year, so don't over-load it in June.
Top tips for eating cheap in Newcastle
Make lunch your main meal. Nearly every good deal in this guide runs Monday to Friday between 11am and 3pm. Little COSMO alone is around £4 cheaper at lunch than at dinner.
Grainger Market closes at 5:30pm and all day Sunday. The cheapest food in Newcastle is only available if you get there in time.
Use Too Good To Go. Newcastle has decent coverage — the Greggs on Neville Street lists Surprise Bags at £2.99 against a stated £8 value.
Head to Stowell Street when you're properly hungry. Portions per pound beat the city centre chains.
Get your campus discount fob or Food Wallet sorted in Freshers Week. 10% off every coffee for three years adds up more than you'd think.
Watch for NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week. It runs twice a year, in January and August, with set menus at £15, £20 or £25 across 130+ restaurants. Worth diarising for the January edition.
Shop the Quayside Sunday Market for produce if you're cooking, and browse for free either way.
