Cheap Eats In Brighton: Where To Eat On A Budget

Brighton is a foodie's paradise but let's be real, surviving on a student budget means you can't be splashing out on a sit-down feast every time hunger strikes. The good news? This city is absolutely packed with brilliant spots where you can eat properly well without crying over your bank balance.

Whether you're a Sussex or Brighton uni student, a city-centre dweller, or just visiting for the day, we've rounded up the best cheap eats in Brighton. From loaded jacket potatoes to award-winning burgers, here's where to fill up for less.

1. Pompoko

If there's one name every Brighton student knows, it's Pompoko. This tiny, no-frills Japanese spot on Church Street serves up generous, piping-hot rice bowls (the "bento" boxes) for genuinely tiny prices β€” we're talking some of the cheapest proper meals in the city. The Tofu Chilli Don has a cult following, even among the non-vegetarians.

Heads up: it's cramped, often busy, and cash only (there's a cashpoint round the corner), but the queues move fast and it's worth it.

2. Tato & Topping

A relative newcomer near Churchill Square, Tato & Topping does one thing and does it brilliantly: loaded jacket potatoes. Pick your spud, pile on the toppings, and you've got a proper filling lunch for not much at all. Finish with a Turkish tea and you're sorted. The owner's known for being lovely, too β€” there's even a buzzer game where you can win a free spud.

3. As You Like It!

Tucked on North Street, a stone's throw from the seafront and the Pavilion Gardens, As You Like It! is the kind of old-school sandwich shop that's increasingly hard to find. Don't be put off by the modest decor β€” the filled sandwiches, baguettes and jacket potatoes are hearty, classic and unbeatable value. Perfect for a lunch break or grabbing something to eat on the beach.

4. Burger Brothers

Burger Brothers on North Road regularly gets called the best burger in Brighton, and the prices are firmly in budget territory. They grind fresh beef every morning and there are solid veggie and vegan options too. The catch? It's a tiny spot, and they're closed Mondays and Sundays, so plan ahead β€” many people just grab theirs to go.

5. Iydea Vegetarian Kitchen

A Brighton institution in Kensington Gardens (the heart of the North Laine), Iydea lets you build your own veggie or vegan plate buffet-style β€” pick a base, a main and your salads. It's fresh, filling, affordable, and all allergens are clearly labelled, which makes ordering stress-free. Save room for a vegan brownie.

6. La Choza

For colourful, authentic Mexican without the chain-restaurant price tag, La Choza on Gloucester Road is a Brighton favourite. The quesadillas, burritos and nachos are generous, and the quirky decor makes it a fun spot for a slightly-more-special meal that won't completely wreck the budget. Tip: it's small and gets busy, so book ahead or join the queue on their app.

7. Foodilic

If you're after something fresh and healthy, Foodilic on Western Road does a brilliant-value buffet of salads and veggie/vegan hot dishes. Grab a box to take down to the seafront, or eat in. Generous portions, reasonable prices, and a great shout if you've been overdoing the takeaways.

8. Chopstix

For proper fast-food-style Chinese on the go, Chopstix on North Street is hard to beat on price β€” and their little taster dishes (around Β£1.50 each) let you try a few things without committing. Order via the screen, grab your box, done. Not gourmet, but reliably cheap and cheerful.

9. Halisco

Slightly more of a treat than the others, but Halisco on Preston Street earns its place: with their first-table discount, many diners find their tacos and small plates work out to around Β£20 a head. The corn ribs and birria tacos are the stuff of legend, and it's a great option when you want to feel a bit fancy on a not-very-fancy budget.

10. Sunbird Deli

Up on London Road, Sunbird Deli serves Mediterranean-style mezze, fresh salads and homemade filo pastries at really friendly prices. The veggie plates are excellent value and the cakes are dangerously good. A lovely, slightly-off-the-beaten-track find if you're over that way.

Top tips for eating cheap in Brighton

  • Look for student discounts - plenty of independents (and chains) offer them, so always ask or check before you pay.

  • Lunch beats dinner - many places do cheaper set lunch menus or smaller portions earlier in the day.

  • Carry cash - some of the best-value spots (looking at you, Pompoko) don't take card.

  • Head to North Laine and Preston Street - two of the best areas for independent, affordable eats.
