Spring is on the horizon, which means warmer weather along with two words: spring break. But budgeting for a vacation can be a huge burden, especially if funds are a little tight right now. That’s where we come in.

With a little finagling and a few tricks, you can plan a fantastic spring break vacation, all for under $300. Sound like a great deal? Then let’s get to planning!

Choosing a Destination

According to Google Flights, these are the top 10 spring break destinations for 2023:

  1. San Juan, Puerto Rico
  2. New Orleans, Louisiana
  3. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  4. Montego Bay, Jamacia
  5. Fort Myers, Florida
  6. Rome, Italy
  7. San José del Cabo, Mexico
  8. Charleston, South Carolina
  9. Key West, Florida
  10. Las Vegas, Nevada

Domestic trips tend to be more inexpensive than international, so start pricing flights to see what you can afford. Even though airline ticket prices have gone up recently, there are still plenty of travel options available for well under $100.

Google Flights has a nifty tool called the Explore Map that lets you price all kinds of destinations based on your current location.

Booking Your Flight

There are all kinds of tricks when it comes to booking your flight to get the most bang for your buck, but spring break works a little differently. Instead of the well-known “book 44 days out from your flight rule,” spring break reduces it to 38. That means now is the time to get your flight sorted out.

Flying during the middle of the week will also save you tons of money. Avoid flying out on Sundays or Mondays, as those are some of the busiest days to fly. Flying on a Wednesday can save you up to 15% on the total cost of your flight.

TikTok users also recently discovered that it’s actually cheaper to ship your luggage to your destination instead of paying to check your bags. The hack revealed that instead of paying $124 to check bags, you could ship the same weight luggage for $48 via FedEx.

Hotels

Instead of racking up bills by paying huge fees for hotels, be sure to check websites like Airbnb which offer shared accommodations.

Even some apartments on the website go for a fairly low amount of money, especially if you’re not trying to be right on the beach or in the middle of the city. The more flexible you can be, the lower your rate.

Cost of an apartment split between four friends: $104

Total spring break cost: $274
