Those who participate typically buy a Christmas Jumper, but it’s also super common to DIY a Christmas Jumper to fashion on the day too.
When was the first Christmas Jumper Day?
Save The Children made Christmas Jumper Day official back in 2012, to encourage people to donate to this fantastic cause.
Historically, though, Christmas jumpers became popular during the 1980s after a variety of television presenters such as Gyles Brandreth and Timmy Mallett began wearing them during the Christmas holidays.
And if you dig back even further, you’ll be surprised to know Christmas Jumper Day wasn’t just about fashioning your best Christmas knitwear. According to Cambridge News, apparently, it goes way back to the 1890s where Scandinavian fishermen would wear them!
Who is Coach Christmas?
Coach Christmas is known as Christmas Jumper Day’s official coach, who’ll guide those joining in on the fun around Thursday 8th December 2022. They’ll give you guidance on how to fundraise if you’re partaking in the event. This changes every year, so keep an eye out!
Once you’ve signed up to fundraise for Save The Children and raised your funds, you’ll need to pay in your Christmas Jumper Day fundraising efforts. The money raised goes to help kids all around the world.

- Claim a JustGiving profile (though you can just use Save the Children’s website)
- Get all the resources you can on how to set up a successful fundraiser (you’ll receive instructions on how to do this)

- The charity asks for a donation of £2, or £1 if you’re in school – to don your brightest, cheeriest jumper
- Then, wear the jumper to school, work or out and about for the day instead of your usual clothes or uniform
- Donate your team’s fundraising on JustGiving or via Save the Children.
