Malaysia bans Man Utd 'devil' shirts

Manchester United shirts declared 'dangerous' due to their red devil crest.

Plenty of people have objections to Manchester United, but we've never heard this one before. The team's red shirts have been banned in Malaysia, after Muslim clerics labelled the Man U crest 'dangerous and un-islamic'.

Old Trafford have an estimated 81 million followers in Asia, with 7,000 members in the Malaysia Fan Club alone. A senior cleric, however, said that shirt wearers were 'promoting the devil', referring to the pitchfork-wielding figure on the club's crest.

The ban has led to a Twitter backlash, with one Man U supporter suggesting that 'Maybe the religious leaders are just fans of Liverpool'. Another wondered if he should 'cover the emblem with a picture of a flower'.

Other shirts off-limits in some Islamic countries include Brazil, Portugal, Barcelona and Serbia, all of which carry images of the Christian crucifix in their team emblems.
