Grandma passes driving test on 960th attempt
South Korean woman becomes national celebrity with her driving test trials.
You know those times when you hear about the friend of a friend who's finally given up on driving after failing their test ten times? Well spare a thought for Cha Sa-soon, a South Korean woman who has amazed the nation by persisting with her motoring dream despite having failed 959 times.
The 69-year-old grandmother has finally passed her test, winning not just a licence but a starring role in carmaker Hyundai's prime-time TV adverts.
'When she finally got her licence, we all went out cheering and hugged her, giving her flowers' said Park Su-yeon, an instructor at the Jeonbuk Driving School.
Mrs Cha, whose surname ironically means 'vehicle' in Korean, said 'I wanted to get a driver's licence so I could take my grandchildren to the zoo'. Ermm, getting the bus might have been quicker...
