Priest gives dog Holy Communion

A priest in Canada has offended church-goers by welcoming Trapper the dog to St Peter's.

Reverend Marguerite Rea of St Peter's Anglican Church in Canada thought she was simply 'reaching out' to a new congregation member and his pet when she gave Holy Communion to his dog.

When four-year-old Trapper accompanied his owner, Donald Keith, to the church in Toronto for the first time, he probably wasn't expecting the reception he received. The minister asked Keith to come up for Holy Communion and when Trapper followed, she thought it would be a good idea to get the canine involved too.

Keith agreed, having told the Toronto Star: 'I thought it was acceptable. There was an old lady in the front just beaming when she saw this.'

But not everyone felt the same and some took great offence to witnessing the German Shepherd-Rhodesian ridgeback cross receiving Communion bread - something that is considered to represent the body of Jesus Christ.

St Peter's Church have since received an abundance of complaint emails over the matter from all over the country.

Poor Trapper. He thought he was just getting a little treat to munch on.
