Wife carrying champions retain their crown

Couple claim their second victory at Finland's World Wife Carrying Championships.

Competitors from all over the world flocked to Finland last week to take part in what is officially our new favourite sport - wife carrying.

The contest, where husbands carry their wives along a 250 metre track complete with obstacles, was won for the second year in a row by Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen. The Finnish couple say the secret to their success is in their chemistry.

Regulations of the sport stipulate that the wife being carried must be over 17 and weigh more than 49kg, otherwise she has to carry extra weights. For anyone who doesn't have a wife, they can still compete, as long as they can find the spouse of a friend, neighbour or acquaintance to carry.

Having fun is another rule of the contest, although judging from the video some people take it pretty seriously. Then again we can't really blame them given the prize on offer - your wife's weight in beer!
