The Magic of Iceland

Flights to Iceland are relatively cheap and are hosted by Iceland's exclusive airline, Iceland Express, flying from most UK airports.

Reykjavik is the island's capital and has a renowned cosmopolitan city centre with bars and restaurants aplenty.

Food and drink can be quite expensive for it all has to be imported, so request to see the price-list before buying.

The Pearl is one of the capital's various landmarks for it can be seen from many a distance due to its huge glass dome.

It is approximately 30 metres high and houses 6 floors inside.

Entry is free, although the café, restaurant and bar means you will probably have to purchase something to fully enjoy your surroundings and views The Pearl offers.

The reception opens up to The Winter Garden, which plays host to several concerts and exhibitions.

However, the Pearl does not just provide such cultural and recreational affordances, but its very location proves itself as a resource to the houses in the proximity as well.

There are 6 tanks underlying the building all containing water, which is heated by the geothermal activity below the earth's surface. This is put to domestic and organisational use in Reykjavik.

There are numerous waterfalls, volcanoes and glaciers, as well as the world renowned Mid-Atlantic Ridge to explore...a must for all budding geographers.

For a spot of retail therapy, head to the Laugavegur, Reykjavik's main shopping street, or the Kringlan shopping mall, situated within walking distance from some of the city's main hotels.

There are several shops inside in which to spend a few hours, including many international favourites such as Karen Millen and DKNY.

Opening hours are similar to that in the UK, with the exception of Sundays where the shops only open during the afternoon.

To make the most of the island's spectacular geographical scenery, a common suggestion is to hire a car during your stay.

Furthermore, the island of Heimaey, off the coast of Iceland, makes for an interesting day out for its historical background is extensive.

The most prominent event in the island's history was that of the eruption of the volcano Eldfell, during 1973, which almost destroyed the area.12»
