Lucky Number 7: New World Wonders on a Budget

by Rebecca Gould at 09:00 GMT, Wednesday, 18 June 2008

First off, getting there!

Your best bet is probably an around the world airline ticket. Airtreks have a special '7 Wonders' ticket which costs about £2300.

Chichen Itza, Mexico

After landing in Merida, hop on a local bus that will drop you at Piste - a second-class ticket is about £2.50.

Chichen Itza is about two miles from the centre so economise by walking.

However, it'll cost you a fiver to get in so it might be worth sleeping first and spending a whole day there.

For true authenticity, bring a hammock and rent a hook at one of the posadas for £2.

Once inside the park, look out for the Temple of the Warriors Sacred Well and the Pyramid of Kukulcan.

Christ the Redeemer, Brazil

Take the comfortable bus known as the 'frescao' from the airport to Flamengo at the base of the Corcovado Mountain.

They are only £1.50 and are much safer than local buses which are notorious for robbery.

Make the most of the amazing view and grab a cup of hot chai to really feel the Indian vibe.

Check into an inexpensive budget hotel for around £40 and make sure to rest your legs for tomorrow's big climb.

However, as Corcovado is 2,300 ft high, you might take the 20 minute train ride to the summit for a tenner.

Go in the early evening and take in the awe-inspiring view and beautiful sunset.

Colosseum, Italy

It's probably the most expensive to visit of all the wonders.

You'll need to take a train from Fiumicino Airport to the Termini station, costing just over eight quid.

The train journey is only half an hour so it's worth fitting the visit into one day because hotels don't come cheap in Rome, starting at about £45 for a basic hostel.

Buy your £7 ticket for the Colosseum at the Palatine box office to avoid the queues and decline to have your photo taken with a gladiator as it costs a whopping £75!

Taj Mahal, India

Fly into Delhi and choose between a five-hour bus ride for a quid and a surprisingly comfortable £8 train ride that'll knock 3 hours off the journey to your destination, Agra.

If you decide on the train, be sure to secure a window seat to make the most of the amazing view and grab a cup of hot chai to really feel the Indian vibe. 12»
