London on a Shoestring

Notoriously, London is a financial nightmare for the average person, regardless of whether you are a student or in full-time work.

Unless you have the spending power of Roman Abramovich or indeed, Boris Johnson, it can seem impossible to get by in the capital without accumulating a severe monetary deficit.

In a study by the Swiss bank UBS, London is ranked as the world's most expensive city to live, if the cost of housing is included.

Thus visitors to London can become overwhelmed by the excessively priced tourist attractions which surround them.

Within a matter of hours, that crisp £20 note in your back pocket can seem to evaporate into thin air.

But thankfully, it doesn't have to be that way.

Having lived in London my entire life, I can assure you that the city's free attractions are just as worth exploring.

Firstly, invest in an Oyster card.

Even if you're only staying in town over the weekend, you'll easily make back the £3 card deposit in savings.

It now costs more for a single paper ticket from Oxford Circus to Tottenham Court Road than it would do to take an exclusive black cab!

Relax and unwind in one of the major parks the city has to offer.

Hyde Park is particularly popular with its 350 acres of lush greenery, lakes, meadows and even the chance to go horse riding.

It's only walking distance from the hubbub of central London if you find yourself struggling to cope with the crowds.

On the south of the river, check out the Tate Modern.

Entry is free and giving a donation to the gallery is entirely optional.

The eclectic mix of artwork and sculpture will keep you entertained for hours.

Evenings out in the capital are almost guaranteed to be pricey if you stay in the centre.

Alternatively, venture outside of the obvious landmarks and you'll find some hidden gems.

The Arcola Theatre in Dalston, East London shows some great post-modern plays and on Tuesdays, it's "Pay What You Can Night".

If clubbing is more your scene, then save money on entry by picking up flyers for events on Oxford Street.

Expect high prices on alcohol though, as not many bars seriously cater for solely students.

Finally, please do not be tempted to take an open top bus tour of the city.

It's a waste of time! Avoid the traffic and discover the real London on foot.

You'd be sorry to miss it.
