Nightmare housemates

1. The loud

Is your housemate a reincarnation of "Nelly the elephant", as it sounds like an earthquake when they get out of bed, and they are barely 5 ft?

Then, when there is actually an earthquake, naturally, you presume that this is said housemate.

The loud housemate is the one you can hear having a conversation about things you never wanted to know, when they are in the attic and you are in the basement.

When you hear the same music being played everyday and your favourite song becomes a danger to your mental health, action is required.

Solution:

Shut yourself in your room.

If you are privileged enough to have a room below loud housemate or above the TV room, don't be afraid to bang on the ceiling with a big stick/stamp your feet loudly on the floor.

"If next to the bathroom, invest in ear plugs" says S. Glover.

These can also be useful when housemates bring home mysterious 'friends'/those you wish were mysterious but are now just permanent fixtures that don't pay rent.

2. The messy:

Despairing at your housemate's clothes strewn all over the lounge floor, especially when it's not even the result of a frantic operation of undress?

The messy housemate is the one who uses the lounge as their overflow and leaves their yoga mat in the kitchen whilst making those around you do involuntary yoga moves as they attempt to negotiate use of the oven without leaving muddy footprints on it.

It takes self-control to keep your cool.

Whilst it is acceptable to hop over things to get to your own bed, 'it should not take a "high-jump impersonator get to your communal sofa", says one second year student.

Solution:

Suggest they follow your lead and donate some of their clothes/belongings to the charity collection that picks up items left outside your front door.

Offer to put their things outside, and they need never find out that you decided to hang on to your bric-a-brac.12»
