Five ways to fill your days

by Robert Leedham at 13:00 GMT, Tuesday, 12 August 2008

As a respectable reader of Beanzine then I'm sure you have no trouble in spending your nights getting up to no end of mischief but once you manage to sleep off that hangover how do you spend your days?

If you're struggling here's a couple of ideas for you to chew on...

1. Form a Band

Spent your summer watching the endless stream of festival footage on TV whilst wishing it was you up there on the Pyramid stage?

Well you're not alone, so pick up some like-minded souls and form a band.

All universities have a battle of the bands every year so you can leave it till then to set the musical world alight or many local venues will offer open-mic nights on a regular basis.

If you think you've got no musical talent though then simply follow my example and play the bass.

2. Sports Team

If you gave up on the dream of pitting your wits against Christiano Ronaldo a long time ago and want another bite at the cherry then join the university team.

As Katie Wales, head of the Warwick women's football team, states 'we hold tryouts periodically throughout the year so we're always open to new recruits coming in'.

However, you may be looking for something more casual and in this case the university sports centre will always have pitches and courts available for hire.

3. Get A Job

Does the thought of putting effort into something without a financial payout disgust you?

It's probably best you get yourself a job then.

Your Student Union will do the majority of its hiring at the start of the year but due to dropouts there will be vacancies available throughout the year.

If you can't find any work during term time look for seasonally based employment when you return home such as joining the Royal Mail at Christmas.

4. Student Media

Any university worth its salt will have a fully functional newspaper and radio station.

Whether you're angling to be the next Fiona Bruce or you come from the Chris Moyles School of Blabbermouth's such institutions will give you the opportunity to hone your skills.

Any extra contributors are usually welcomed with open arms so don't be deterred by the thought of being rejected, even Beanzine are constantly on the search for new contributors (see here).

5. If All Else Fails...

Go to your lectures/seminars and do some work you lazy toe-rag.
