Politics pick of the week (September 19th)
This week's pick comes to you by way of a friend of mine studying Politics at Nottingham: he first told me about Gulfnews.com, the online home of the UAE English language newspaper of the same name, and it has since formed a substantial part of the news I read.
Events in the Middle East and the Gulf are some of the most contentious in global politics, and as such necessitate a great deal of media coverage; few news services are able to provide as full and balanced an account of these activities as Gulfnews.
The website is primarily divided into geographical subsections: 'The nation', 'The Gulf', 'The region' and 'The world'.
Probably the best one to start with is 'The region' - this transports the reader to page giving the headlines from Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, the Middle East and other nearby areas.
Whilst the news deemed most interesting or relevant by more familiar news services will be broadcasted worldwide, Gulfnews is able to offer a much greater selection of stories from the region.
The site also has a comment and analysis section, which helps put much of the news in context for the reader.
Consequently, for those looking for a bit more than sites such as the BBC's or (heaven forbid) MSN's offer, Gulfnews is an excellent alternative.
