Happy in health: the student guide

by Matthew way at 10:04 GMT, Friday, 23 May 2008

You can be given a range of advice when it comes to staying healthy, much of it conflicting.

With a student budget getting your 5 portions of fruit, 3 servings of wholegrain and sufficiency of omega 3 each day can become difficult on a day when your nectar points cannot even save you.

A study conducted at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands found that between 50 and 80 per cent of all medical information delivered during an average consultation was forgotten instantly.

So somewhat encouragingly, here are five tips which might just make you feel amazing (or if not maybe just a little less bloated in the evenings).

1. For my first health tip do not expect to be dumbfounded by my wisdom. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables is suggested to reduce the risk of illnesses, and we should consume it in multiple colours in order to get the best from natures finest.

2. Visiting your doctor. As a man, I do nothing to test the stereotype that visiting the doctor could potentially hurt our reputation as a testosterone fuelled male.

However visiting the doctor with any medical concern can often eradicate fears that you may have the latest life threatening illness.

3. Forget cars and even save money by skipping the bus. Walking is the easiest exercise to partake in and it's free. Transport can really hurt a student's pocket, so whenever possible skip on into your morning lecture.

4. If it is your goal to get fit and healthy then the one thing fitness experts suggest is to make a plan and stick to it; in terms of the food you eat, your exercise routine and your general lifestyle choice.

With a guide to keep to, it is much easier to stay on track, so perhaps have a list of good foods pinned to your fridge, and try getting into a routine of when you are going to exercise and for how long.

5. My final tip for becoming a healthy student is to enjoy it. You do not have to tell yourself you have an allergy to chocolate to avoid eating it, simply have it in moderation.

In terms of exercise, there is really little point in going to the gym every morning for your session if it physically repulses you.

Discover a sport that you enjoy and stick to it, maybe even try out for the university team.

There really is no need for your life to become a living hell for it to be a healthy one, so make it fun and enjoyable and that will no doubt make you a happier person in itself.
