Scream for ice-cream!

This may not be the perfect summer for needing an ice cream, but we all know it doesn't really have to be hot to enjoy this frozen dessert.

But with shop-bought tubs and lollies often at high prices, is making ice cream at home an option?

Yes, and with these simple recipes, it's easier (and cheaper) than you might think.

Honeycomb ice-cream

This recipe involves making honeycomb from caramelised syrup, then adding it to ice-cream made from double cream and milk.

The recipe also contains vodka - so maybe not one to share with the kids! See the recipe at BBC.co.uk/food.

Instant banana ice-cream

This requires a bit of forward thinking in terms of freezing the bananas, but other than that the recipe is very simple.

It also contains only four ingredients, so it's kind on the wallet, too.

Five-minute ice-cream

This recipe really is as quick as it sounds - it doesn't even require freezing.

Just make sure you've got two different size freezer bags, lots of ice, and strong arms!

Try shop-bought smoothies and you'll benefit from one of your five-a-day at the same time

Ice lollies

For a healthier alternative, try making homemade ice lollies.

You can buy moulds cheaply from eBay and depending on what you use, no preparation time is needed.

Try fresh fruit juice, pureed fruit or shop-bought smoothies and you'll benefit from one of your five-a-day at the same time.

Check out Netmums.com for more homemade ice lollies ideas including Angel Delight lollies - admittedly the site is for children, but that doesn't matter! Alternatively (and less healthily!), add cider.

It might be raining outside but don't be put off - lots of spare time during the holidays is a good time to try out more unusual recipes like these.

If you want to try some homemade ice cream without all the effort, though, you could always buy an ice cream maker.

You can pay up to £300 for one but Amazon has some more purse-friendly options for around £30. Enjoy!
