Who can wear it?

As the midpoint between pink and blue, purple is a colour that looks equally good on either sex.

However, to avoid looking like you've been Ribena-ed, guys should stick to purple on the top half only.

What sort of purple should I wear?

All different shades will work, from deep indigo, through mauve and violet tones to more subtle lavender hues.

Check out this great article which will tell you what shades will suit you best.

How should I wear it?

Really draw attention to your royal image by keeping it simple in the daytime - pair with denim or crisp white for a fresh summer look.

Add some basic black and gold accessories at night for a sexy and polished look. If you're feeling daring experiment: mix and match different shades!

Where can I buy it?

Once you've familiarised yourself with the key hues it's probably best to just hit the high street.

It goes without saying, but nip in to Primark and H&M to see if you can kit yourself out cheaply.

Lots of charity shops also arrange clothes by colour now so pay a visit to your local Oxfam and check out their purple pieces.

Try River Island for bold pieces like their bright purple skinny tees and glamorous yet comfortable leather peep toe wedges.

They also have some great purple denim cropped jeans for £30 that are smart enough to wear for work.

And for a special occasion you can't afford to miss their fairytale lilac Orchidee Prom Dress and body-con Strappy Bandeau Dress at only £44.99 apiece.

Not just for your grandparents, Marks and Spencer spend loads of money on fashion forecasting and it pays off!

They have a large selection of purple jewellery this season: earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets galore in a beautiful deep violet shade.

On top of that they've also got huge sunglasses and pashminas for the girls, or classic shirts and knitwear for guys, all in the key shades.

Check out the website - it's got a really nifty search function which allows you to search for items by colour!

Boys should snap up River Island's cheap and cheerful £12.99 Lightening Print tee and dark purple Plain Notch Neck top which will instantly have your girlfriend... 'purple' with envy. 12»
