Students of Style

Looking good can be difficult at times especially when your student budget is holding you back, but that doesn't mean you can't look every bit of the fashionista that you already are.

It is possible to channel the glamorous city look and look just as sparkly as those Sex and the City girls, even on the cheap!

The main way to do this is by taking inspiration from what is in fashion this Spring/Summer '08 but giving a twist to what is on the runways to get your own unique edge.

One fashion trend that is cool and cheap for the summer is shorts.

This versatile fashion item can be used to channel lazy chic with a simple tank top or a pair of jewelled flip flops if you want to add that extra touch of glamour.

For a more sophisticated look try teaming a pair with a pussybow blouse, which gives a nod to the 40s era but keeps with a modern edge and a pair of simple peep-toe heels.

They can also be worn with a jewelled neckline, perfect for those clubbing nights!

Another key item to invest in would be a ruffled skirt. Taking inspiration from the 70s, skirts this season are short and swishy.

On a bright day wear high and cinched in at the waist with a tucked in vest top, on a dull day wear with opaque black tights to avoid that British chill!

Invest in accessories. They are by far the cheapest way to glam up an outfit, go for chunky, tribal style long necklaces and brightly coloured earrings to give an impact statement.

Funky Accessories has an amazing collection of jewellery, many items for £2.99 and under. Bargain!

Primark is the number one choice for cheap clothes. My advice would be to buy any plain items from there as it is simply value for money!

Basic tees and tops can be mixed and matched with different pieces. They also stock much of the latest trends so ruffles and shorts alike wont be difficult to find.

You don't necessarily have to follow fashion trends to look good

New Look is the most popular for shoes, with shoe styles to suit all tastes and the majority of shoes £20 or under, it's definitely worth exploring. Plus don't forget that 10% student discount!

Shopping online has fast become one of the easiest ways to shop and many websites offer cheaper and stylish fashion choices than the high street such as ASOS.

Also, many high street websites now have sale items online which is worth a look too.

Finally, the simple but most prominent rule of all - make use of what you already have!

Many fashion trends follow on from previous seasons or take inspiration from the bygone eras.

More importantly, you don't necessarily have to follow fashion trends to look good.

Start your own fashion trend with items that you already have in your wardrobe and make a quirky fashion statement.
