'Rapunzel, Rapunzel'
Many people seek inspiration from their peers and celebrities in the quest for a new hairstyle.
However it is exactly this reason why they may end up looking more Marilyn Manson than Marilyn Monroe.
So here I present to you a style guide - a few rules, regarding your face-shape, to acknowledge before that next imminent trip to the hairdressers.
1. Round Faces
Steer well clear of harsh fringes which will only stunt the length of your face and make cheeks appear podgy.
Instead, opt for a subtle side swept fringe with short choppy layers, beginning at the jawline, cut into the length and feathered around the face.
Charlotte Church makes the most of her round face by keeping styles simple and textured.
2. Oval Faces
Most styles will work well with this face-shape, particularly blunt fringes and side-swept bangs.
If your face is long, you should avoid any hairstyle that elongates your features.
Long tousled hair falling around the face, á la Jennifer Aniston, works particularly well because it's textured style softens the harshness of a distinctive oval face.
To achieve the 'just-got-out-of bed' look, a few squirts of Garnier's Surf Style Spray (approximately £2.99) on wet hair and left to dry naturally is all it takes.
3. Heart-shaped Faces
The classic bob cut at the right length can accentuate any jaw line, so decide whether to emphasise your distinctive face-shape by taking the plunge and having this cut, or stay well away if you would rather not draw attention to it.
Chins are usually prominent amongst the heart of faced, so to detract attention away from this feature hair should be styled with a side parting.
Layered cuts and sweeping styles will flatter any square profile, for such a face shape needs to be softened.Sarah George
Reese Witherspoon is the proud owner of a heart shaped face and has experimented with a wide range of hairstyles over the years.
She has mastered the layered bob, as well as a long sleek style, by sticking to the rules mentioned above.
4. Square Faces
Layered cuts and sweeping styles will flatter any square profile, for such a face shape needs to be softened.
Long and short hair lengths should be given texture with added bounce and cuts should not fall anywhere near the jawline.
Square faces can be elongated by back-combing hair at the crown to give the appearance of extra height.
Despite a square face-shape, Demi Moore breaks all the rules and shows how you can work a long, one-length haircut.
This accentuates the face-shape, so only follow suit if you feel brave enough!
5. Pear Faces
Narrow foreheads and a wider jaw characterize this face shape, exemplified by the likes of Tori Spelling and Minnie Driver.
Therefore, the aim of any hairstyle on the owner of a pear-shaped face will be to balance the proportions.
Full fringes can create the illusion of a wider forehead, as will tucking hair behind the ears.
Keep hair short, for any further below the jaw line and the length of the hair will only add extra width to the bottom half of the face.
Layers thin hair at the bottom and thicken it at the crown, so these are an inevitable request to your hairstylist.
