Making the most of the summer sales

by Sarah George at 09:00 GMT, Wednesday, 30 July 2008

Summer is once again upon us and whilst many of you would associate trips abroad and ice-creams aplenty with this splendid season, there is one thing we usually forget about that epitomises such a fabulous time of year - the summer sales.

So to get you psyched for the big event hitting high streets nationwide, here's a few tips to maximise your delectable deal deciphering skills.

1. Get there early!

Find out the dates online when your favourite shops will be premiering their sale items.

Once this information is in place, get an early night and set your alarm for a relatively rude awakening so you can guarantee yourself front seat in the morning queues.

Drag your friend along to keep you company whilst you wait for opening time; there's nothing worse than waiting in a line of pushing and shoving eager beavers at a time of day you're not all that familiar with.

However, have your phone on stand-by if you just so happen to lose your friend in the onslaught of shambolic shoppers.

Alternatively, whistles á la Monica, Rachel and Phoebe in the 'Friends' episode where they go to get Monica's wedding dress in the bridal sales, is another sure-fire way to be reunited with one another at the end of your sales session.

2. Summer stock

Keep in mind that most of the stock in the sales will be the line's summer range, with the odd winter garment here and there.

Therefore, when buying items think ahead to next year as to what will still be in fashion and ultimately, whether you will still like it in a year's time.

No matter how cheap the clothing, the pennies will begin to add up once you start buying carelessly.

No matter how cheap the clothing, the pennies will begin to add up once you start buying carelessly.

A future wardrobe crammed with things you wouldn't even lay your eyes on, let alone wear, is an accident waiting to happen.

So here's the chance to be picky with your purchases!

3. Gifts galore

The summer sales are the perfect place to find cheap presents for upcoming birthdays; accessories being the perfect splurge due to their timeless qualities.

You can never go wrong with an elegant handbag or classic jewellery piece...especially at a snip of the price tag!

4. eBay

Buying to make profit is the ultimate way to get the most out of the sales.

Clothing and accessories that are bang on trend will fetch the most at auction, so get clued up on what is hot in demand at the current moment in time, or what has the potential to be so, before going.

Alternatively, if you are more technologically challenged than others, car boot sales are the traditional way forward to creating cash.

So what are you waiting for?! Fish out your finest protective body gear and get ready for a rampage amongst the clothes rails, because this is bargains at their best.
