Back To Black

This autumn/winter saw a lot of the major fashion houses using copious amounts of black on the catwalks to create opulent and timeless collections.

This look is really an evening look which doesn't mean you can't wear black during the day, but night time is when the new styles really come into their own to create a stunning look.

Sticking on any old black dress simply won't cut it this year without a certain amount of adjustments, as this year is all about new cuts and great fabrics.

To look bang up to date, lace is the fabric to be seen in.

It is a hard fabric to get right as it can end up looking a tad trashy but fear not, there are some really grown-up, classy styles around to make this look work for everybody.

Take note from Givenchy, Prada, and Ferretti on how to look classy in the material.

If you don't wish to bare all like the catwalk models, layering is essential.

Not only will it mean you don't have to show your nipples to the unsuspecting public but it adds drama to the overall look enhancing its effect.

You can also team lace with some of the harsher materials out there such as leather and PVC to modernise the look and give it a rockier feel for daytime.

Lace doesn't need to be dressed up as it is busy enough itself so try not to over wear accessories, if at all.

Cut-wise this autumn/winter is all about the Little Black Dress.

An ultimate classic, the LBD is arguably a piece for all seasons, every year.

This year, however, sees a real revival for the staple and new cuts have come in to update the look and make it a trend in its own right.

Lanvin, Balmain, and Fendi have all gone for one-shouldered numbers while Stella McCartney, Versace, and Marcheesa sexed it up with strapless minis.

Again, keep accessories simple; diamonds classicly go well with the LBD adding class and dimension to what can be quite a flat look, while stilettos are the shoes you should be walking in.

Key pieces on the high street:

1. Lipsy Backless Lace Dress, £50.00, ASOS

2. Swing Bow Dress, £45.00, Topshop

3. Lace and Ruffle Dress, £25.00, New Look

4. Asymmetric Ruffle Dress, £38.00, ASOS

5. Leather Tab Lace Belt, £22.00, Topshop
