Top 5 Student Films

by Laura Baxter at 09:00 GMT, Saturday, 5 July 2008

Given the choice, I think it's fair to say that the majority of students would prefer a night out on the tiles as opposed to a night in in front of the box.

But when the funds are low, the workload is high and the body is suffering, there's nothing better than a quiet night in with good friends and good films.

Here's my top 5 favourite student films:

1. Withnail and I (1987)

This 80s cult comedy is a truly hilarious tale of two failing (and rather alcohol dependant) actors and their chaotic holiday to the countryside.

With an outstanding performance from Richard E. Grant as the intellectual alkie Withnail, this film has some unforgettable one-liners that can often be applied to student living.

I've been known to utter the phrase 'I must have some booze, I demand to have some booze' on more than one occasion!

This film is so renowned it even has a drinking game based around it where the players must drink what Withnail drinks along with him in the film.

But since he consumes a multitude of beer, cider, sherry, wine, whisky and lighter fluid throughout the course of the film, I can't personally condone it myself!

2. Vanilla Sky (2001)

This is a marmite film. You'll either love it or hate it. Personally, I think it's great.

It follows the life of hedonistic playboy David Aames (Tom Cruise) and the trippy events that lead to him being imprisoned with no recollection why.

Starring Cameron Diaz as his jaded lover and Penelope Cruz as the love of his life, this is a story of true love, temptation and inner turmoil.

With a surreal ending that viewers will either find mesmerising or utterly ridiculous, this film is definitely worth a watch and has a great soundtrack too.

3. Anchorman (2004)

Everyone loves Will Ferrell and his performance as San Diego anchorman Ron Burgundy is probably one of his funniest roles.

This is a marmite film. You'll either love it or hate it.

Full of sexism, silliness and star performances from Vince Vaughn, Paul Rudd and Steve Carrell, this is definitely a random, fun film for the nights when you just feel like having a good old belly laugh!

4. The Goonies (1985) / Stand By Me (1986)

I've had to cheat a bit here as I can't choose between these two classic 80s films.

Both very different but equally as entertaining, they really capture the essence of childhood friendships.

The Goonies is slightly more light hearted and joins a group of oddball friends who set out on a quest for long lost pirate treasure.

Stand By Me is more of a coming of age tale based on Steven King's novella The Body.

Each film offers a trip down memory lane and questions like 'can anyone have friends later on in life like the friends they had when they were 12?'

5. Sex and the City (2008)

One for the girlies!

I have to admit I was dubious about this. The end of the series was so wonderful that I really didn't think a film could beat it.

But it did. Funny, fashionable and fabulous this film follows the lives of our favourite New York girls after their apparent 'happy endings'.

Without giving too much away, personal favourite scenes include Charlotte's 'trouser accident' and the dramatic scene in which Carrie batters Mr Big with a bouquet.

I'd recommend this film to anyone who loved the series and I know it'll definitely be part of my DVD collection when it's released.

So there you are people. Shut the curtains, get the popcorn in and happy viewing!
