Fool's Gold
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, Alexis Dziena
McConaughey and Hudson team up again (How to lose a guy in 10 days) in this part-comedy, part-action adventure thrill.
The story is original, for the rom-com genre at least, and the characters are almost believable.
Finn (McConaughey) is so obsessed with finding treasure, lost in 1715, that he has lost everything in his quest to find it.
He and his now ex-wife Tess (Hudson) team up again after Finn finds a vital clue to the treasures whereabouts and manages to convince Tess's boss Nigel (Sutherland) to fund the hunt. The hunt begins, against Tess's better judgement, but they are not the only ones determined to find the treasure....
There are a few goofs... a couple of geographical errors and a few technicalities.
When Sutherland's daughter arrives by helicopter, she does so by landing on the yacht.
Unfortunately the yacht does not have a landing pad on it! But nothing major!
One of the major problems however, was the stereotyping. There's a Paris-clone in Sutherland's daughter, a couple of aging yet sassy homosexual chefs and a rapper called Bigg-Bunny!
Hudson scowls her way through the film, she calls McConaughey "immature" and resolves not to waste any more time on him... then decides to give the discovery one more go.
You can see where it is going. The lack of chemistry between Hudson and McConaughey is obvious, despite the fact that they seem to be playing largely the same characters as their last meeting, just with prettier scenery.
The film meanders along and it becomes easy to lose focus.
I'd recommend taking a half hour nap in the middle, you wouldn't miss much!
And if you're a Dirty Sexy Money fan Sutherland merges into Tripp Darling easily. It's like watching Jennifer Aniston in Along Came Polly.
A rom-com is a rom-com, no matter how predictable it may be if you like the genre 9/10 films will satisfy.
You can just sit back and not have to think too much, safe in the knowledge that the boy and the girl will end up together, hopefully with some laughs along the way.
But be aware that with Fool's Gold most of the good bits are in the trailer.
All in all a mediocre film that makes a decent rom-com. Fool's Gold scores a 6.5/10.
