Interview: The Saturdays

They're heading to Number 1 this weekend with new single Missing You. We caught up with Una to ask her about Twitter, swimming and Girls Aloud.

Why the new mini-album? Did you run out of songs? It's rare in the pop world, no?

We didn't run out of songs and actually, it's more common than you might think. Keane and Justin Bieber have done them. And it's 8 songs, so it's not really 'mini'.

According to the internet, you're a championship swimmer, have done Eurovision and play the guitar. Which of these skills are most important to The Saturdays?

My guitar playing. It helps us from being perceived as a girl band that can't play instruments.

What did touring with Girls Aloud teach you?

Every night we'd come on in front of a big black curtain, so we needed to wear really bright clothes to stand out and that's become an important part of our look.

What do you say to the people who say you can't make money from music anymore?

In the early days, I was quite lucky and made a bit doing corporate work. I used to gig in bars and restaurants but that industry has gone down a lot with the recession. Right now, it is a very difficult time to make money. Doing weddings and corporate work is a good way of making money on the side...

You have 42,000 Twitter followers. I have 400. Does this mean I'm unpopular?

No. 400 is actually quite a lot! It's about talking to other celebrities and then you get more followers. When I talk to celebrities, I get more followers.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Sheryl Crow - I think she's got a tough, rocky voice which isn't on the album - it's quite different to what she's done before.

Sheryl Crow has done some acting work recently. You've appeared in Hollyoaks. Any more acting plans?

I've done a little. I used to do school musicals and played a big part in that - it's definitely an area that I feel I'd really like to explore but I don't really have any time at the moment. If we could do The Saturdays movie, I would love that.

With Girls Aloud off the radar, do you fill the gap?

People are taking a bit more notice of us because we're one of the only girl bands around at the moment. We're very fortunate but we need to be prepared for any competition that might come along. We have got a head start on them all because we're on our 8th single but we're not afraid of the competition, to be honest.
