Battle of the Bands: James B. Partridge
We hear more from the only solo act left in the competition...
How would you sum up your sound in 5 words?
I would say quite atmospheric and intense but with a sense of bittersweet nostalgia and soul.
What's the best/worst live performance you've done so far?
It’s always slightly disheartening when the only people in the audience are the other acts playing, but no matter the size of the audience it’s only a difficult gig if no-one listens! In fact, one of my better gigs has been at a small venue in Bournemouth. An intimate audience tends to focus attention to the music and lyrics in a way that might be lost in a larger or less atmospheric setting.
Who are you main musical influences?
My head is like an iPod which is broken and stuck on shuffle, there are lots of different sounds that inspire me. In terms of singers, I bow down at the feet of Morrissey, David Bowie and Frank Sinatra. My favourite songwriters range from Brian and Dennis Wilson, Neil Young, Burt Bacharach to Peter Gabriel and Chris Martin. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Iron & Wine, Seth Lakeman and Suede. Also, I am a complete Beatles disciple.
What is your favourite thing about your University?
Cambridge University is a name that comes with A LOT of baggage. It is of course a place where academic success is massively pushed and encouraged but this isn’t always a good thing and can become creatively stifling. Having said this, the intense air of competition that there is here can produce some shows and performances of such a high standard that would be hard to beat anywhere.
Where do your song ideas come from?
I quite like the McCartney-esque idea of creating music from people watching and tapping into the pathos of the lives of others. Sometimes I could be inspired by some poetry or just simply by what’s going on in my life and the people around me.
Have you got any forthcoming live dates?
Well, I try and perform as much as I can in whatever guise so I’ve been doing a fair amount of singing in Cambridge but I’ll probably play a few low-key gigs over the next few weeks around the city if I can!
Why should readers vote for your track over the competition?!
Because if you do I’ll send you a personal, handwritten thank-you card with a £50 note tucked inside…probably.
If you are one of the final 3 bands to be in the London final, what can the audience expect from you?
I’d hope to be able to provide something a little different from the usual fare.
