Battle of the Bands: Article Thieves
Article Thieves' Ben tells us about their influences and what to expect from a live performance...
How would you sum up your sound in 5 words?
Delicious, appetising, sumptuous, soothing and arousing.
How did the band first get together?
We were saving a kitten from some burning wreckage… Just kidding, we actually met from being in halls of residence and on nights out.
What's the best/worst live performance you've done so far?
The worst was outside our student bar on the Vale where the sound was pretty bad and I felt like the worst public speaker of all time...
The best was the other week at Island Bar in town where everyone was loving our show, so much so we even got an encore!
Who are you main musical influences?
A huge variety of music from all different types of genres... anything from Notorious B.I.G to Nirvana. I know Toby our drummer loves Muse, and I original started wanting to be in a band growing up listening to Green Day, but we listen to anything and everything. Recently we’ve starting getting into more experimental stuff like Sigur Ros and Local Natives so hopefully we can incorporate some of their sounds into future recordings.
What is your favourite thing about your University?
The campus is impressive... there's a great atmosphere about the place. You can’t knock the Clock Tower…
What is the story behind the name of your band?
The Article Thieves were a notorious gang in London during the 19th century, famous for sabotaging laws that were not yet passed... That’s a lie, we thought they were two cool words, we didn't want to be too pretentious.
Where do your song ideas come from?
Lyrically from personal experiences or events around me that inspire me. We’ll branch out into protest songs when we’re a bit older! Musically we try and incorporate interesting rhythms and sounds we draw from some of our favourite bands
Have you got any forthcoming live dates?
We've got a gig at The Sunflower Lounge in town on Thursday the 25th of November, and a pending one at Urban Village in Selly Oak on the 12th of December. We're looking for as many as we can get!
What's the best thing about being in a band?
Getting the chance to be creative and to have fun and play live. I personally also love the recording process of being in the studio and trying to get the best sounds out of our band. We value putting in a performance at our shows, so bring us to London!
Why should readers vote for your track over the competition?!
Because it's full of energy and will go down well live in London!
If you are one of the final 3 bands to be in the London final, what can the audience expect from you?
We'll make sure we do everything we can to give them the best show possible, both musically and especially performance wise! We always love getting the crowd involved, so vote for us because it’ll be worth your while!
