Free app of the day: Find My iPhone
Next time you check your pocket and your phone isn't there, there could still be a glimmer of hope...
In a nutshell: Track down your iPhone or iPad when you lose it or it gets stolen.
Available on: iPhone/iPad/4th gen iPod Touch
Why do I need it? Because no one can afford to lose a phone.
How it works: If you lose your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch you can locate it using another device or via Apple’s MobileMe website - assuming the app is already set up on the lost device.
When searching for a lost device its location will appear on a map using a combination of GPS, wi-fi data and phone tower data. If you think there might be people near the phone you can choose to have it display a message or play a sound to attract their attention, even if it’s on silent.
There’s always the unfortunate possibility that someone has done a runner with your pride and joy and has no intention of giving it back. In which case the app has a couple of other useful tricks. Firstly you can remotely set a new PIN to prevent the phone from being used, and if all hope of getting the phone back is lost you can even remotely wipe your iPhone to permanently erase all of your personal data. Take THAT phone thief.
