The 9 coolest things to bring to uni
Forget bedding and kitchen utensils, these things you cannot afford to forget!
For many of you this week will be the start of one of the biggest changes of your life – it's time to head off to uni!
With so many things to think about, the closer to moving in date the more you’ll find yourself thinking about what to pack. How are you supposed to condense your life into a couple of suitcases?! There are of course the essentials, and if you’re still looking for where to begin check the 50 things you can’t go to Uni without.
But once you’ve got the essentials sorted there’s one more checklist you need to refer to - the coolest things to bring to uni. Think about it, you turn up on Day 1 to a sea of new faces and you’re all politely, if a little awkwardly, making small talk. What better way to break the ice and introduce yourself than bringing something completely unique, largely pointless, but above all cool to the table.
Check the list below for a few of the best ideas of what you can bring to instantly assert yourself as the coolest person in your flat. You can thank us later.
Have you visited the world's first ever online Freshers' Fair yet (all years)? It has loads of freebies and discounts and it’s free to get in.
1. A Toastie Maker

Nothing out of the ordinary, but you’ll be surprised how well it will go down. Chances are you’ll be the only one to bring one of these godsends to the kitchen; offer it up for communal use and you could find yourself being rewarded with free toasties as an expression of gratitude from your new flat mates.
2. Weirdly-shaped ice cube moulds

GENIUS in their simplicity. Can be used for vodka jellies, ice shots or just for your every day ice cubes… Whatever their purpose, they will make drinking games more interesting and you a whole lot cooler (pun only partially intended).
3.Funny Loo Roll

If you’re sharing a bathroom, toilet roll with a twist is essential. Okay that’s a strong word, but it’s a good conversation starter and will hopefully determine who has a sense of humour. Plus what better way to pass your time in the toilet than stimulating your brain with some Sudoku.
4. Face Paint

Fancy dress is usually a given for Freshers, and whilst you can’t buy everyone in your flat a costume (don’t even consider it – it would be way too creepy) you can bring face paint or glow paint. Often a cheap way of avoiding buying a whole new outfit is to use face paint to be more creative. Plus it’s an excuse for your flat to bond as a group – just make sure you can trust the person who's painting you, particularly if it’s in a place you can’t see…
5. An awesome collection of DVDs

There will be many hungover days during Freshers. Many. Whilst you may have brought all your folders and pens for the days when you will actually do some work, you need to make provisions for the days when you want to cry in bed all day eating crisps. Make your hangover that tiny bit more sociable by inviting your flatmates to your room for a movie night – the more choice of classics, comedies and well-known series, the better.
6. An essentially pointless but brilliant drinks contraption

From over sized Martini glasses to beer backpack dispensers, via the booze bra – the possibilites are endless. No one in their right mind will question the necessity of it. Whatever contraption you choose, it will confirm your flat as THE place to go for pre-drinks.
7. A Onesie

So this isn’t really for the whole flat – BUT it is a cool thing to bring to uni, and you will feel left out if you don’t bring one. For those who may think they are pointless, you are - in a word - wrong. In winter a onesie is the only guaranteed piece of clothing to lock in warmth. Don’t even think about not bringing one.
8. Board Games

For some reason, they’re often forgotten about on most ‘what to bring to uni’ lists, but rest assured, they are PRICELESS. Pretty much any game can be turned into a drinking game, and they’re the perfect solution to fill any awkward silences during Freshers’. Twister is always a safe bet.
9. Word Fridge Magnets

You must have seen them at some point in your life - and if so, you will know how addictive they are. Generally speaking, fridges at uni are boring. Word magnets pave the way for endless kitchen fun, seeing as you can form whatever sentences your imagination can create - maybe save bringing these out until after the first week to avoid any potential offence...
