How to make your own delicious movie snacks!
From popcorn to nachos, we show you how to do movie snacking the DIY way. Tasty and cheap - what could be better?!
Going to the cinema or even just watching a film on TV can be a pricey affair - it's the snacks that bump it up.
Luckily, we’re on hand to get tickets for nothing:
But best of all we tell you how to make these ridiculously easy and incredibly delicious money-saving snacks.
They work perfectly whilst curled up in front of a DVD (we've got a deal for that too, of course.. Sign up for the LOVEFiLM free trial). Or just have a pre-cinema kitchen get together, then make and bag these little lovelies up.
Popcorn
No movie would be complete without popcorn! Avoid paying high multiplex prices and, instead, make your own batch. Seriously, it’s dead easy. And cheap. If you’re thinking ‘making it myself might be cheaper, but I really can’t be bothered’, then you clearly have no concept of just how easy it is:
What you’ll need:
Popcorn kernels
A paper bag
A microwave
How to make your popcorn:
1.) Put half a cup of kernels in the paper bag.
2.) Fold the end of the bag a few times so that the popcorn doesn’t spill out.
3.) Make sure there are no staples in the paper bag, we wouldn’t want your microwave to explode.
4.) Put the microwave on for 90 seconds.
5.) Add your preferred topping, whether its salt, sugar, chili powder, honey or an alternative!
6.) Eat!
Nachos
Aside from a frankfurter hot dog, Nachos are our second favourite movie snack of choice. But a squillion quid for three crisps? No thank you. Make your OWN nachos and decide exactly how many you can munch on during the screening.
What you’ll need:
Corn tortilla wraps (about 12 large ones will make the equivalent of a large bag of Doritos)
Oil
Salt
How to make your nachos:
1.) Heat two pints of oil in a frying pan.
2.) Cut each tortilla wrap into 6 slices each.
3.) In small batches, fry the tortilla wedges until they crisp up.
4.) Remove from the heat and drain on paper towels.
5.) Add salt and then leave to cool.
6.) Add cheese, sour cream, guacamole and any other toppings you desire. Scroll down to find out how to make your very own salsa.
7.) Eat!
Crisps
If fried nachos aren’t your bag, why not try baking some crisps instead? Not only is baking a healthier option (there's no deep fat frying in sight) but it's also mega easy.
What you'll need:
Potatoes or any root vegetable. Parsnips crisps are our favourite!
Baking sheets
Olive oil
salt and pepper
How to make your crisps:
1.) Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
2.) Peel the skin off the veg and chuck away.
3.) Peel or chop the veg into wide strips.
4.) Place veggie strips in a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Use your hands to ensure that all strips are lightly coated.
5.) Place strips on a baking sheet adding lots of salt and pepper over the top.
6.) Stick in the oven for about 25- 30 minutes or until, er, crisp-like. Turn halfway through the baking process.
7.) Remove your tasty crisps and leave to cool on kitchen roll.
8.) Once cool - and crispy - store in an air tight container. Your crisps will then keep for about three days.
9.) Eat!
Salsa
Now to make your salsa so you can dip all those amazing homemade crisps.
What you’ll need:
Cherry tomatoes
Chili pepper
Cucumber
Coriander
Salt and pepper
Oil
Lime juice
How to make your salsa:
1.) Chop the tomatoes, chili and cucumber up into tiny pieces
2.) If necessary, tip into a blender and, er, blend.
3.) Pour into a bowl and add coriander and salt and pepper.
4.) Pour in some lime juice with a touch of oil and stir.
5.) Dip away!
Rocky Road
Sometimes you just need some chocolate in front of a movie. Maltesers, preferably. But what if you could combine Maltesers, plain chocolate and marshmallows in one, delectable treat? Cinemas don’t serve Rocky Road but there’s no reason why you can’t take your own...
What you’ll need:
225g plain chocolate, broken up into chunks
2tbsp golden syrup
2tbsp cocoa powder
2 tbsp caster sugar
100g Maltesers
100g milk chocolate and white chocolate chips
100g mini marshmallows
225g ginger biscuits, broken up into chunks
Icing sugar
How to make your Rocky Road:
1.) Line a cake tin with baking sheets.
2.) Heat the butter, chocolate, golden syrup, caster sugar and cocoa powder in a pan and stir together. Once it’s melted together, leave to cool for 10 minutes.
3.) Put the Maltesers, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows and ginger biscuits into a bowl and mix in the melted chocolate sauce.
4.) Pour into your cake tin and put in the fridge, allowing to cool for at least 2 hours.
5.) Once ready, cut into slices and dust with icing sugar.
6.) Eat!
