See West End Shows as Part of London City Break
London theatre bookings
are high-up on many tourists' to-do lists, and understandably so. The
UK capital's West End has a reputation for producing some of the
world's finest stage shows; a reputation that has been around since
1663 when the first venue on the famous Drury Lane was established.
Things have come a long way since then. If the first performances were
something of a work in progress, they eventually gave rise to the likes
of Chicago, The Lion King and Cats; all of which proved to be box
office smash hits. The West End has grown to become larger than the
country's film industry, and in order to take it all in it's no wonder
that visitors opt for London theatre breaks.
Staying for one or two nights in the capital means city breakers can
take in a couple of performances in addition to enjoying the sights and
sounds of London. Thankfully, London shows
are no longer limited to the upper and middle classes; with so many
cheap theatre tickets available, you can look forward to attending that
show you've always wanted to see, whether it be All The Fun Of The
Fair, Avenue Q or Flashdance The Musical.
Among the most
popular productions is the long-running Ben Elton musical We Will Rock
You. The performance, which combines the writer's talents with the
legendary music of Queen, is set in the futuristic world of Planet
Mall. Regularly topping ticket sales charts, the musical is one of the
highlights of London's theatre scene.
If it's something more
risque you're after, why not catch a performance of Chicago? The
musical, which is based at the Cambridge Theatre, tells the story of
cabaret singer Roxy Hart, who ends up spending some time in jail after
murdering her lover.
Chicago is a mainstay of the West End.
Having launched at the Adelphi back in 1997, it switched to its latest
venue in 2006. A year later, the production celebrated its tenth
birthday by holding a gala performance, which saw the reuniting of
original cast members Ruthie Henshall, Ute Lemper, Nigel Planer and
Henry Goodman.
London's Theatreland is celebrated for its
variety; not just in terms of the venues, but in terms of the
productions, too. With so many performances to choose from, why not
make a weekend of it and take in as many shows as you can? Whether you
prefer musicals or comedies, you're promised a weekend to remember.
