Save Energy and Money – See the Light

How do you save money, be eco-friendly and stylish at the same time? With many students feeling the squeeze, here are some tops tips for leading a penny-wise, responsible and yet cool student life.

Start with your lighting. Did you know that the lifetime of a conventional lamp/bulb is 1,000 hours? The lifetime of a light or lamp with LED bulbs can be up to 35,000 hours. LED lights were invented about 30 years ago, but it has only been recently as more and more people become energy efficient, that they have taken off.

Save some money and brighten up your student digs at the same time by investing in some new light fittings. LED bathroom lighting or wall lights will look great, save you a fortune and do your bit for the environment by dramatically reducing your carbon footprint. Also, don’t forget to turn the lights off when you leave a room.

It might be winter, but by turning down your heating by just one degree, you could save up to £60 per year on your heating bills.

Don’t heat your hot water up more than it needs to be, as you will be wasting energy. Check your thermostat. It shouldn’t be more than 60 degrees.

Get some heavy duty material from your local fabric shop to make some curtains. It will cheer up your digs and stop the heat from escaping.

Don’t leave laptops, computers or TVs on standby as that wastes huge amounts of energy and could increase your bill dramatically.

Only boil as much water as you need when you are brewing up or you are using more energy than you need to for water you are not going to use.

Persuade your landlord to install some energy saving measures in your student digs – there are discounts and grants available and the landlord could also claim a tax allowance. The Energy Saving Trust has all sorts of advice and information to help you to persuade them.

Close internal doors to keep the heat in.

Get some funky draft excluders for the front and back doors. They will look good, keep the place warm and reduce your heating bill.

Remember that the size of your TV screen is related the amount of energy needed to run it. The smaller screens are cheaper to run.
