How to Get Your Kids Involved in the Kitchen

The kitchen is often considered as the centre, or heart, to any home. Children and adults alike use this as an area to talk and to create great and tasty meals. But how do you make sure that you keep everyone involved in the kitchen? And what are the best ways to encourage your kids to cook?

Cooking is a great activity to share with children because it helps to prepare them for later life whilst being enjoyable. Encouraging your children to help in the kitchen can be done in a number of simple ways, but here are a few examples:

Make it Fun

Making cooking fun is the easiest way to get kids involved. All kids enjoy cooking and baking, especially if they are allowed to get directly involved so always assign them tasks to complete. Think of interesting and different ways to arrange your food – like creating a face out of Spaghetti Bolognese – as this will make the cooking experience much more fun.

Cutting salad items into interesting shapes is another great way to make cooking fun. This helps to engage children’s creativity and improves the overall cooking experience.

Let them Decide

Kids love to think they are in control so let them decide certain things. This could be as simple as what meal to cook or what plates to use when serving the meal. Always keep your kids involved by giving them choices. Allowing them to make decisions is a good way for them to learn new skills and also helps them to feel mature and grown up. You could even get them to choose items when shopping, such as herb and spices which are offered by a range of brands like Schwartz.

Use Technology

A great way to get kids into the kitchen is to entice them with technology! All children love playing with gadgets and nowadays a great supply of cooking resources are available online. These include discussions and forums which swap cooking tips to video footage from top brands demonstrating how certain recipes are cooked. One such brand which provides these types of videos is Schwartz. These videos are perfect to help your children understand the different steps in a recipe and can help to keep them focused and engaged. You could always film your own video cooking a recipe and let your children upload it afterwards.

Use it to help their Education

There is no reason why cooking can’t be educational too so why not combine this fun experience with learning? Nowadays most children will be taught some sort of Food Technology or Home Economics at school and will be expected to know certain things.

Cooking is the perfect opportunity to help children understand how food is digested and why it is important to have different combinations of foods: such as carbohydrates and proteins. This will not only help them in their cookery lessons later in school but will also be invaluable for their science lessons.
