Finished uni, what are your options?
The world after university can seem a daunting place for graduates, but there is a wealth of options available after completing an undergraduate course. Whether a university leaver wants to continue studying through postgraduate courses, start their career or take a year out to go travelling and experience the world, it is an exciting time with opportunities galore.
A large proportion of students leaving university will go into the world of
work, whether it is through a graduate job or more general role. Most large
organisations offer graduate training schemes – where instruction and practice
is given to help the employee develop up the ladder in the company – however
these can be very competitive and some leading firms look to secure a candidate
before they have completed their degree.
Graduate jobs are readily available across all industries and sectors, with
companies looking for top-rate candidates to help drive their businesses
forward. University leavers are in great demand by firms across the UK as they
are seen as a wealth of untapped talent that brings fresh, innovative ideas
that can transform a company. If a university leaver is not completely decided
on what field they want their career to take shape there remain several
options.
There are a massive amount of non-graduate jobs available which give people a
chance to earn money, gain valuable life experience and also plan their career
path while also coming with a fair degree of freedom. Of course many people may
take a year out and go travelling - an option that has become more popular in
recent years. This can refresh a brain tired from years of studying, while also
giving an opportunity to take on charity or voluntary world while seeing
far-flung corners of the globe.
A number of university leavers will look to go onto postgraduate courses, and
there is over half a million people studying Masters Degrees in UK universities. Students
can get specific qualifications that could make them highly sought after in
their chosen field upon graduation. With this can come higher wages and better
jobs, but postgraduate courses are demanding and there
can be huge competition for places.
Every university leaver has different aspirations for where they want their
next step to be after graduation. There is not one path recognised as superior
and indeed some people can combine options, or change their aspirations as
their career or home-life develops.
