So you’ve got into university and meet your new friends, you’ve collected phone numbers and hazy memories and now you’ve found yourself hungover, in a strange cell like room that doesn’t feel like home. Well, here at The Binary Box we know how that feels and are here to help. Below you will find a selection of top tips to make your room feel a little more homely and original, without submitting yourself to the typical knee jerking reaction of buying the first large format posters and cheeky flyers your union throws at you.

Clear walls are not always empty walls. Filling every inch of wall space does always make things better. Find a clear, well-lit wall and fill it with one item that you really enjoy. This can be a piece of art, canvas print or stencil; the boldness of that one item you really enjoy will always look better then the 50 items you vaguely find amusing.

Play with scale. A large format piece will add instant gratification as long as it’s not fighting for attention within a cluttered wall. Even the ceiling can act is a large canvas, however be careful not to choose anything too heavy.

Create unique layouts. If you want that personal touch, why not select a product that comes in multiple elements. Wall stickers always look great on plain walls, but the added bonus of being able to create your own personal scene will introduce a scene of ownership to a room.

Personal Touch. As well as their artistic charm, the products you choose can have an artistic or practical element to them. Chalk or white board wall stickers can allow for more creative freedom as well as earning their worth as a reminder note pad or message board.

Mix perspectives. Using both 2D & 3D elements on your walls will allow you more creative freedom. Try adding an interactive element like coat hooks, photo clips and hanging baskets to a flat image.

Mood lighting. Try to get a selection of lighting combinations. Being able to distinguish between those times when you are working and when you can relax will physiologically help you distinguish between the two and allow you to work or rest better, which can be particularly necessary when you are going to be spending a large amount time in the same space.

Storage. Look into the various options for your room when choosing your storage plan. Everything from hooks, plastic crates, organisers and bookshelves can help. Not only will they help keep your floor and walls clear from clutter, but can also become canvases in their own right. Also, anything you own personally can get an even more creative touch to, plus you can take it with you when you leave.

The most important thing is to enjoy what you create and remember that it can always change. So try new things out, play around and see what works best. This is room, your home.
